Steering wheel.. boss kits explanation plz?
Gangel - January 7th, 2011 at 12:21 AM

Hey pplz :)

Im trying to look into getting a nice sexy new steering wheel for my ongoing resto of my 68 herbie :)

it currently has what i would presume to be the original boss kit (if thats the bit with spines insert to column and u screw the wheel into!!)

So... if im looking for a new boss kit to match my steering wheel i have chosen.. is there a "measurement" or something that i look at on the boss kit to make sure that it has the correct spline size on the column?? Like a number or code or somethign??

I hope im being clear in what im asking, as I know it sounds a bit jumbly!

Stock steering wheels don't have a boss kit, they slide directly over the splines and are retained by a nut in the centre.

If you're looking at buying a new steering wheel, just ask for a boss kit to fit a 1968 Beetle and the supplier should be able to find the right one for you. I don't know the measurements off the top of my head, but I do know that there are at least three different types of steering spline on Beetles, so make sure that you get the right one!

Hi Glenn,
The kids working at supercheap wouldn't know their ass from the ground on a good day,

The wheel you have now how many bolts is there holding it to the boss?

is it 9 like this one?

Or 6 like this

I still have both of them kicking around somewhere but I've been promising Daimo the horn button off the formuling one for years and the red TypeR I think maybe missing the boss.

If its the small 6 like the red one just measure and see if they are 70 or 74mm cos thats all the common ones like Momo, Saas, autotechnica etc

cheers again joel, always there to help me :)

Im liking the Type R one u have there, i think ive seen that around, but does the red feel too .. "plasticy" or is it just something u get used to?

I have the same bolts as the top pic, so i assume i would need a new boss to do the bottom one! :)

Tacky and awful, that dates back to my fast and furious boy racer phase

If you keep an eye out on ebay every now and again a nice formuling wheel with the 9 bolt boss turns up but they're usually only black leather or woodgrain though.

If you want something newer best bet is get a new boss kit
60-73 beetle is the one you need

yeh ok cheers, and i can get that from CVW cant i?

:S any others u have experienced?

I like the "racer" look, but more for a laugh being on a bug with the carrera kit, not for any reason that im a HARD CORE doof doof bogan!!!

Interested in getting some colour on it, but totally trying to avoid the tacky ones!!

o well, ill just have to keep an eye out :) if u see somethign nice, pm me hahah

Is this correct then?

Clueless sellers

It doesnt fit one of those vehicles listed

If it fits 60-73 bug it wont fit 911s, if it fits the 911 it will only fit 74 onwards bugs

Joel - January 9th, 2011 at 09:14 AM

Buy a quality wheel like a Momo, cheap on ebay from the UK

STIDUB - March 9th, 2011 at 12:48 PM

autotechnica make one, you can get it onlinne or through repco, its longer/taller too so you can fit flat wheeels & still fit your fingers between the indicator/wiper stalks & the wheel, SAAS make/made one but you would need to use a dished wheel to suit.
If your unsure id go through a shop, that way if it doesnt fit your spline & wheel choice comfortably take it back & try again :)

on a side note, its crazy how similar the dash above looks like mine, including the wheel
