DIY oil change on a 2.1 wbx - how much oil does it hold?
kombi kountry - December 15th, 2008 at 11:11 AM

had a go at changing the oil and filter on my 2.1 wbx by myself for the first time over the weekend.

put in 4.5 litres of the new stuff to start with and was going to hold off on putting the remaining 0.5 litres in until i found out exactly how much a 2.1 wbx holds?

i didn't want to over fill it, but couldn't find it in the owners manual and was having trouble getting an accurate reading off the dip stick.

Anyone know?

Thanks

Thanks

4.5 litres seems like alot when a type 1 aircooled only holds 2.5 litres. I don't know either though

I used to throw about 4.3, 4.4ltrs in including filter.

Manual states about 4.5Ltrs but sometimes manual is a little exact.

So long as its not over the top mark on dipstick it's all good. If is drop out a little, say 2-300ml.
Remember it's 1ltr between Low & Full mark on dipstick.

What u mean it's your first time changing your own oil????
What grade u use??
10/50 semi synthetic is a good oil in a wasserboxer.

Thanks.

Found the 4.5 on closer inspection of manual (4.0 for engine & 0.5 for filter). Under better light also got a better reading of the dipstick. All seems ok.

I've only owned the T3 for about 2.5 yrs and have always had it at the vw shop for a service, but thought i try my hand at doing the oil change myself.

Can't remember off the top of my head what grade used. used what the vw mechanic used last time and also checked it against the manual. Might of been a 10/30???

I can do better than that.
My first T3 was an 85 CL Caravelle.

First time I've ever "owned" a VW first oil change was a bit rough over filled it by 500ml or so. Driving up a few steep hills out of Cobargo and this blue smoke out the arse end every hill and lots of it. Missus was driving and here i am in the boot whilst motoring down the H'way doin the suss, pulled over couldn't see anything wrong no oil leaks oil level was fine (hot reading), so kept on keeping on.
By the time we pulled over again maybe 50k's later, waited until engine cooled and dumped out maybe a coke buddy size bottle of oil.
Then as underneath noticed oil running out near the muffler. Yep blue smoke = oil overfull and running out somewhere (cant remember) every time the T3 got to a certain angle.... Lesson learnt.

Oh how about overfilling the same car on the day we bought it. Another story for another time.

I would have thought a 10/30 might be a bit to restrictive. I was given the same advice from VW in Sydney and chose to ignore. That's what they put in "new" VW's.
