Thought there were a few but seems they are very rare.

Pretty rare, but they do exist. I've only seen one in person, at DOVW in SA last year. People over at the VW Watercooled forum would know more, and I think there's a member there who owns a few.

Mk1 (and Mk2) Sciroccos were made by Karmann in their Osnabruck factory. They made 504,000 Mk1s (1974-82) and then 290,000 Mk2s (1982-91) before it was replaced by the Corrado. The Mk1 Scirocco actually debuted on the German market six months before the Golf in 1974, in order to iron out any production problems (the Mk1 Golfs and Sciroccos were built on the same platform).

The Mk1 went on sale in the UK only a few months after the German debut, so yes they certainly were made in RHD. In fact the UK got a number of UK-only models, including the high-spec Storm models in 1979 and 1981.

There WAS a Mk1 Scirocco put on display at the Sydney Motor Show in 1976, imported by LNC Industries. However they decided it would be too expensive and it was never released on the Australian market.

As for LHD only - Lee you might be thinking of special models like the Golf Rallye, Golf Limited, Golf Country, or the Audi quattro Sport?

Hi,

This 1987 Scirocco has been on Carsales for a while, seems low kms and reasonably priced, though not as old as the ones being discussed here.
