Fuel tank leak on '85 T3.
upset - May 22nd, 2010 at 11:28 AM

My 1985 1900cc T3 drips fuel from the tank on every fill to the top. I've replaced the plastic pipe and rubbers but it still drips and has cost me much money, especially at current petrol prices! The Brooklands manual is useless in this area (and many others too) so I wonder has anyone got a picture of the tank system?
For example, what is the plastic tank for under the front offside wheel arch, mine is empty. but I can see a wet area further in on the fuel tank top but it is hard to reach.
Any help appreciated as the mechanic has no further ideas.

They are breather tanks
REALLY complicated set up

Guaranteed it will be something to do with those 2 stoopid plugs on the top and that cross pipe

I had the same problem on my 82 air cooled

Bugger to fix as you have to keep pulling the tank

Thanks Bizarre, that was quick! I'm still hoping to get a picture (copy) of the set up so I'll have to be patient.

Same here when i had my 82,but mine had a bastardised filler neck as well,i ended up making new fittings as one of mine broke, plus you have to make sure the cross pipe isnt crushed between the tank and the chassis to block it off. As it is suposed to thread through it, otherwise it wont breathe like its supposed to..

Fantastic Bizarre, many thanks. Now I can root around and see where the leak comes from, I hope! Which manual did you find the drawing in?

it sounds like a common problem as mine leaked a while back after i filled up with fuel and parked on a heavily cambered road....

might have to investigate this further hmmm
