I had a three week lend of one recently, 4motion, 2.8 V6 motor, 6 speed manual, leather interior, sunroof, oettinger pack etc, it was lovely to drive, performance was good, traction was fantastic. Loved nothing more than pointing it at a corner and being able to give it a bootful on the way through. It was also large enough for the family, and the boot big enough to fit a bass guitar lying flat.

It was looking tired though, as most cars of that vintage will be unless they have been kept by the most fastidious of owners.

Leather steering wheel was worn, plastic bits and pieces everywhere were cracked or broken, but most of all, the last week I had it was pouring with rain, and I got a swimming pool's worth of water in the front passenger side, which I think came through the ventilation system, because I couldn't trace any leaks to the door, window or sunroof.

The car I borrowed was for sale, and I seriously thought of buying it because it was fun to drive, but the mixture of it having been driven by a smoker, and the fact that a lot of money needed to be thrown at it to get it up to decent nick put me off. If anything major went bang, it would cost a fortune I think.

Lovely car though.

I had a 2001 v5 bora, manual 5 speed... I was a bit worried as well about buying one as I researched it, and it said that boras can be unreliable. I never had an issue with it besides A piece in the window that snapped causin the window to drop inside the door, but apparently this was a call back on boras 00-02 from Vw as they'd made it from plastic instead of metal. Other than that it was an amazing car, leagues above every other car from the same year:)

i currently own a 4 motion bora and i love it to bits.i did have an issue with it just after i bought it the hydraulic clutch cylinder died on me on the M5.Good thing iv owned beetles because i drove it home with out a clutch very entertaining. NOT!!!!!

try and get a bora with good service history and not with over 180ks with cream leather.
also If the idle is rough or its got a diff whine dont get it
good luck

Only the 2.0l had a timing belt

Also all the mk4 chassis cars had plastic window regulator clips , but once changed to the metal ones you wont need to change them again for a long time .

The cars are fairly well built with mainly smaller issues . The biggest issues Im finding is the lack of proper servicing and parts replacing . CV joint boots tear and if not replaced damages the joint . Oil leaks not fixed early will damage coolant hoses etc .
The 2001 model came with coilpack + leads , 2002 onwards was individual coilpacks .

look up on ECSTUNING.COM from the usa lots of mechanical parts and heaps cheaper from them than stealerships.

and a good mechanic is Matt from Camden Gti and vw village at kensington if you live in sydney.
