Suggestion Box
vanderaj - June 21st, 2009 at 10:14 PM

Hi there,

I would like to hear from everyone what are the things you'd like to see improved here at Aussieveedubbers.

Suggestions can relate to the site, the staff (be nice, though - we're all volunteers!), events, even simple things like community or club involvement.

I'm looking forward to your thoughts. I will be implementing the best of these ideas as soon as I'm able.

thanks,
Andrew

Hi Andrew,
I think it would benefit the usability of the forum overall to improve the search facility, which has a number of quirks and limitations. I'm happy to help with testing, docs., etc. if required.

Do you have some examples of how search might be improved? Other sites which have features that might make sense for us to gain somehow?

thanks,
Andrew

1. If I search for "examples search" or "search examples", neither returns a result, though both words are in close proximity in the quoted sentence. I think an option, possibly even the default option, would be to return pages ranked in order of the number of hits each individual word gets in a post, with, say, double points for hits within the subject line. That way "ignition advance" will return page matches from posts containing phrases such as "ignition timing advance" or "ignition" and "distributor advance".

2. The possibility to tag certain posts (blog style) with meta tags would potentially decrease the entropy of the information on this site.

3. It would also be interesting for moderators to be able to mark certain posts as canonical threads so that when someone wants to find out if they can use unleaded petrol in their ACVW these canonical threads would be highlighted.

4. You could even take a leaf out of Google's book and give precedence in search ranking to posts/threads that are referenced in other posts. Certainly returning an ordered ranking rather than just a chronological ordering.

5. Plural/singular handling. Suffix removal. Porter stemming. Specialised spelling assistance ("Where you looking for jalousie window?"; "Where you looking for zwitter?")

6. [Quick] Search accessible without leaving current page, possible even as a floating widget.

7. Advanced search (regular expressions) for the few diehards, though I'm aware that the actual use of such facilities where provided is usually very low, so may not justify the effort.

maybe small but on occassion its frustrating
added to the mix now
cheers paul

Hi

I visit other sites, and I can search new post since my last visit, this is useful if your time poor, I use the topic activity button to do this here.

Also other forums have a marker on the post to indicate that Ive posted in that topic before, useful if somebody is waiting for you to answer a question.

If I go to a post at the bottom of the page, when I return to list of posts Im moved to the top of the page again.

Steve

Hi Andrew,
Just a small one, but annoying nonetheless.
The login page has 3 minor annoyances:
1. - focus is not set in user name input when you arrive at the page
2. - tab order is worng; should be set so that tabbing goes ID -> password -> log in button
3. - log in button should be default action when pressing Enter

[Edit: actually that works; there are only two problems]

These catastrophic errors are together costing me about 0.7 extra seconds and two mouse clicks a week, so you can see I'm easily annoyed!

I have to say other than the point I agreed upon, I like the sites navigation. And its information is amazing (from my experience anyway) I sort of wonder how the for sale and wanted etc can be improved as it has the potential to get bigger than that shite Fleabay site. It seems to me at present that the site needs to improve its search on that and maybe even set time limits and request there posted again to keep them fresh. Maybe it also relies on us to keep some prices real. I do feel that prices are normally great but occasionally a little over the top.

STIDUB - July 26th, 2009 at 02:02 PM

i dont know if this has been mentioned before but perhaps a thread of places reccommended by members of avd for business that sell bits for resto/mod purposes for our vw's? its painful trying to find the 1000 different places you need bits from, so if people put up business details & positive critisism of them it would be a huge help in future to find it all in one place, kinda like the links directory but more wide spread, say...
VW parts dealers - local & o/s
mechanical workshops from standard to crazy modification style
wreckers that have vw's frequently
engineers to approve modifications
importers - cars and parts
paint strippers /panel beaters / spray painters
tool supplies?

& anything else we can think of...
just a thought :) :tu:

I'd like to be able to change my avatar and be able to view the site without having to log on every time.

But other than that maybe an improved search function and keep up the good work..

colonel mustard - October 1st, 2009 at 02:53 AM

calling cards. as per this thread -> http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=79267#pid737365

It would be cool to have a link in the top bar for "calling cards" or "avd flyers" so that they could be printed and be put on VW's @ shows, carparks, etc.

other clubs do it, so why can't we?

Gangel - January 7th, 2011 at 08:54 PM

Ok i dont know if this is what was meant by a previous poster, however:

I would be great if there was a tab at top that would let me see if there are any new replies on any of my posts
(eg. Look at whirlpool.net.au)
-In that forum i can click on my useranme and it lists all threads i have posted in recently (last 7 days) and then whether there is a new poster.
-At the moment im posting in 6 threads and half the time i cant find them all (easily)

Just an idea that i think would really add to the usablility of the site :)

Gangel - January 7th, 2011 at 08:56 PM

OO and also, the ability to do a basic "WHO AM I" that pplz can read if they click on your profile.

Eg. Mine would say few words about me, a pic of my car and a bit of info about what im doing to it :) (rather than starting a new thread just to talk about ME!! lol)

1303Steve - January 7th, 2011 at 09:37 PM

Hi

I often visit another site, a tick appears next to any thread that I've replied to in the past. I find this very useful for keeping up-to-date with recent posts.

Steve

PS I've replied to these threads with the tick, I put the green arrows on to highlight them.

Gangel - January 7th, 2011 at 11:14 PM

yeh thanks steve, thats pretty much wha ti mean

there is this one currently in the forum. its under your profile as Biography

as for the little marks we use to have one that marked the threads you posted in, dont know what has happened to them. the new replies link would be good, maybe even a recently active threads link.

Message to Andrew ,
Mate I have GOT to say in the STRONGEST words possible that this site needs to be scrapped and start again.
For a 1st time user to do something VERY simple like put up an advert for a vehicle for sale or to find parts etc is incredibly difficult to do. To be frank what i want to do is place an advertisement ..... the screen labels should reflect that, its not a post .... posts hold up my fence.

There is a LOT of very sadly designed pages, mostly geek orientated that confuse people SOOOOOOO much they simply would walk away and not bother.

At 54 I am very computer savvy and have used thousands of websites ...... NONE of which are so cluttered with geek items that bear no relevance to what the registered user is trying to do.

The most BASIC of which is adding a photo, no mouse over help, nothing to indicate the rules and regulations, nothing to say it was successful, nothing to even say SAVE THIS EDIT !!! ....... are you serious ?

It looks as if nobody has given any thought or consideration to the design of data input screens.

I registered to do 2 simple things, 1 ... advertise my broken van for sale ... 2 advertise my broken van for parts .... this should not be difficult. However it is extremely difficult ..... bad / non existent menu system ... no idea whats going on behind the scenes. Sorry I left my crystal ball at home.

NO OPTION to say SAVE CHANGES !! OMG .... why would that ever be missed out and percieved as normal ?

Initially the thought did occur to me to advertise my business on this site .... a few hundred bucks a year might be worth it. But after trying to get my advert published for the second day now .... I dont have the time your site requires me to invest in it.

Sorry mate, I am trying to be as diplomatic as i can but somebody needs to give your web developer a rocket.
The site is far from user friendly , its not even easy to navigate ..... nevermind try to find a HELP section for navigation ..... pullleeeeese DO SOMETHING !

Have you ever checked the number of visitors to your site as oposed to the number of peeps who dont register ?

Someone seriously needs to get a grip on fixing this, its a great notion and could be a LOT bigger site ..... trust me.

Regards
AngryAussie

Albert

I am a member of a few other forums that use the phone app tapatalk, it enables me to follow threads while mobile.

Not sure if this software is compatible but its a great app to keep up with forums when you are out and about

tar76 - August 9th, 2012 at 06:20 PM

Any shirts or stickers coming up again? Monies may help for future upgrade!

I still love this site no secert passwords, i find it easy to navigate (probably use to it) and don't get the hassle's from nazi moderators.
