WTB NSW Thermostat flaps and linkages
viiking - October 21st, 2018 at 09:56 AM

I'm looking for a full set of thermostat flaps that go into the fan shroud and linkages to suit a 68 beetle. I have nothing of the whole system left for my resto.

I can get a set from Awesome Powdercoat in the US, but am looking locally first.

Test

I have some in Brisbane on a fan shroud

What are they worth

Non doghouse ? You need the full set, remember to include levers and clips, and a working thermostat costs as much as the rest. I paid 80 euro for a nos thermostat 2 years ago at a show in the Netherlands. I also bought another good thermostat at the VW Spectacular 2018 for similar $.

I guess so. I haven't got any of these bits so I assume they will fit. Any idea what the shroud is off?

Type 2 Splitscreen, but I think they are the same for beetle

That one looks the same as the one I removed from my German built 1968 (sorry, not for sale). You would just need to straighten the connecting bar a little. Getting a working thermostat will be a challenge.

Now if you already know the following feel free to ignore it. There should be a little arm off the flaps on the drivers side. This arm should have a cable attached to it with the other end attached to the flap in the air cleaner so that when the fan housing flaps are closed the air cleaner draws warm air off the exhaust. When the flaps open, the cable then moves the air cleaner flap to take air from the engine bay. You may have to use a black sheathed bike brake cable suitably shortened if you cannot source one if you are wanting the resto to be complete. If your 1968 is Australian, the above might not be relevant

Thanks Wayne. I remember seeing all of this when I was a kid but now forgotten. I have the two flaps, one with the counterweight but everything else has been lost/removed over the years.

The car is a fully imported German vehicle AFAIK so should all your info should be relevant.

It turns 50 next Tuesday, so it will be getting a cake, even though the body and chassis are separated. LOL.

My '68 turned 50 on April 1st (yes, that is what the factory tells me) but unfortunately no cake. Body and chassis together but engine out (soon to be replaced). If I can help with anything (except parts as I am keeping my stock parts) let me know
Cheers

You can buy the latest version of the thermostat, won't look original of course, but perhaps until you find an original.
