help me out here, I got these on my beetle and bus, how do you tell the size, stupid q I know, they are dated from 56 to 65 with a stamp on the rim..

I measure 16" as per pic, but they have 15" stated on the tyre.. :duh

splitbusaustralia, how do you tell beetle v's barndoor?

Unity-28 - October 8th, 2004 at 10:08 AM

The rim will measure 16" from end to end, but there is a 1/2 inch lip for the tyre to sit in, therefore taking 15" tyres. Does that make sence?!

16" rims take 16" tyres. Latest date stamp for
a 16" rim is 54? (Theoretically could be 55 but I've never seen one).

So, green57 that's a 15" beetle rim in your pic. Look at your
beetle and bus rims. Notice the difference? One is
'solid' and the other has 5 little slots...

no, i have a set of slots spare, they are not slots.. the mesure 16" as per pic, defently dated, will take more pics, im thinking they have had the centers changed or something..

warb - October 8th, 2004 at 10:30 AM

okrasa power - October 8th, 2004 at 11:24 AM

gotcha.. cheers

Mr Bubble Head - October 8th, 2004 at 10:07 PM

Jim

I'm sorry to say that the rim I have isn't a barny rim after all I have had a close look and behind the rust it says made in England

Sorry to get your hopes up !!!

nIck

robnjo - October 9th, 2004 at 07:45 AM

I think I have one rim, it measures 42 cm, it looks the same as the pic. I take a pic after work to day and un-load it. If its the right one its yours for nicks.
Rob

BenettonVW - October 9th, 2004 at 08:44 AM

Thanks all for the responses. Robnjo, appreciate the gesture.

RobK, did the 16" barny rims even have slots then? I thought slots were bought in later? Obviously not..

I would be wrapped if I could get two more of the ones like this.. Something tells me it will take a while.. :o

robnjo - October 9th, 2004 at 06:09 PM

.......so this one is what sort of rim?

BenettonVW - October 9th, 2004 at 08:56 PM

That looks type 3 15" to me.. What does the tyre say?

Something like 165 x 5.5 x 15?

robnjo - October 11th, 2004 at 02:15 PM

The tyre has nothing written on it, on either side, its a cross-ply tyre.
the measurement I took was from the other rim which would mean its a 15 inch rim.at the swap meet there was an early panel for sale with two rims on the back the same as mine but had the four slot rims(splitty) on the front.not sure who was selling the panel, might have been Alec from Toowoomba as it was next to his stand of goodies
Rob

BenettonVW - October 11th, 2004 at 02:27 PM

Hmm.. oh well, thanks for looking.. Anyone else? I think it is a long shot..

Volkspower - October 11th, 2004 at 02:44 PM

robnjo,
you have a beetle rim there. A type 3 rim doesn't have hubcap clips on it.
Cheers
chris

BenettonVW - October 11th, 2004 at 05:17 PM

Of course, my bad.

voltz - October 11th, 2004 at 07:55 PM

so............barndoor's came with 16" standard ?
I just checked mine and it has 15",they must have been replaced at some stage I guess

BenettonVW - October 11th, 2004 at 09:33 PM

Most VW's pre 54 or up to 54, came with 16" rims. It seems these are Beetle rims, therefore Split Beetle/ Zwitter (regardless pre oval probably).

RobK, can you show us some Barny 16's please mate? I thought they all were the same.

Unity-28 - October 11th, 2004 at 09:52 PM

Incorrect Jim, Zwitters were the first beetles with 15's. Only double glovebox splits have 16's. As for split buses, Im not 100% sure, but all barndoors had them....

N!

splitbusaustralia - October 12th, 2004 at 01:11 PM

Pic of 16" Barndoor bus rim.

I've seen the 16" 'bus' style
(with slots) dated 53 and 54. MAY have all
been solid rims 51/52 (hmmm) but there is a big disinformation regarding 16" barn bus rims being solid. Think that's just because the slotted 'bus' rims are very very hard to find and not seen that much.

regards

RobK

p.s. hope image size is OK. Updated to XP, lost all
software experimenting with photoshop 7 now etc etc
