What kind of wheels did the Country Buggy come with?
Are they Bus wheels?
Hi
Yes, they were the earlier bus wheels. 15" x 4.5"
They were painted black with black painted hub caps.
The 14" x 5" wheels will fit on, don't use too wide a tyre.
Do you have a Country Buggy?
Cheers
Tony
No I don't have a Country Buggy but Love the simplicity of them. I Would love to scratch build one like John did.
John didn't scratch built one . He had one and did an "extreme " repair. 😃
I thought someone e scratch built one ?
I could be wrong, but it was my impression John essentially reformed every (or nearly so) body panel to exact original dimensions.
He started with a very trashed out CB and redid the whole nine yards.....meaning almost everything with new sheet metal.
I guess maybe John weighing in on what his exploits included would be most helpful.
What say you cb john???
Well, Steve, you are both right. It was an extreme repair where except for two panels which I could not remake without spending thousands on tooling. It was front and rear cross member of the body.Everything else was remade. Some of the minor details were changed / modified /, because did not make much of a sense to copy them slavishly...that is about all to say...

Awesome job John! That was quite the project and it turned out spot on.
So I take it the Country Buggy wheels are the slotted wheels and not the smoothie wheels?
When I say slotted I mean the 4-1/2 x 15 Lemmers.
Yeah I am a bit confused on the wheels as well. My CB came with slotted wheels like the Early Bus Lemmerz ones pictured in this thread for the
front wheels and smoothies for the rear wheels. I doubt they came with two different types from the factory.
The CB parts book shows the correct wheels to be the "Slotted" Lemmerz Early Bus style in the 4-1/2" ×15".
Its hard to tell in most photos of Country Buggies to see if they are smoothies or slotted because of the black wheels and black hub caps.
Does anyone know which wheels are the correct wheels because I would like to get my CB as correct to original as possible?
Thanks!
Also, while on this subject, does anyone know what years the Lemmerz 4-1/2"×15" slotted wheels were produced?
I stumbled upon this photo Bill had posted in a mirror discussion that also was talking about an engine crank. I assume Bill would have had original wheels on his CB including his spare. He had on his CB the slotted not smoothie rims. I guess this photo of the slotted wheel on Bills CB plus this photo I found in the CB manual pretty much ssolidifies the "Slotted" not "Smoothy" wheels to be the correct originals. Plus, I dont think VW made a 4-1/2" wide x 15" "Smoothy" wheel.

The pictures in the CB parts manual are generic, picked up from other manuals, be careful presuming that they represent the actual look of the item.
In the case of the wheels they do look correct as it’s taken from the Type 2 reduction hub brake page. That picture of the spare in the front of
Bills CB shows the correct rim for a CB. They never had “smoothies” by which I assume you mean 15” beetle wheels, although they will fit on.
Lee, yes the 14” wheel will fit on over the reduction hub, just.
What happens is you see pictures of CBs with beetle chassis under them, wheels and all. Some even use the seats and steering wheel, so they’re almost
undriveable. Then you see 14” wheels on them because 15” tyres are too narrow to be practical and hard to find at a normal price. The 14” also fit
under the front guard with wider tyres, particularly if you have a beetle chassis and running gear. The 14” will not fit under the bonnet as a spare
however. The beetle wheel will.
So there’s plenty of room for confusion but 4 ˝” x 15” slotted are the correct ones.
I have restored 4 x 14” for street use, and 5 x 15” to be fitted with the expensive tyres, for when it needs to look correct. Tip, use the
expensive, German quality hub cap clips, the cheap ones are just nasty.
