68 Beetle Correct Wiper Motor and Assembly?

I am restoring a 68 1500 Beetle.

The attached photo is a wiper assembly that came with the car but was not fitted. Is this a correct one for this year and model?

I have seen a round cylindrical motor fitted instead of the rectangular one.

Does anyone have a photo of their 68 which is the original and correct one for reference?

that's the same as the one in my 68. was told it was the only year they used it.

Yes, that is the 1968 ONLY [in Australia] wiper assembly

they have the the small shafts of the early beetles but the wiper arms have a grub screw to hold them onto the shaft.

these would have been the same as the German 1967 one year beetle.. I believe..

They were 68 only in most countries but Aussie assembled 1500s used them from 68 till 70, the round cylinder shaped wiper motors and splined wiper arms didnt come in till 71 here and were then SWF instead of Bosch

Joel. Yes explains what I have currently fitted is the "wrong" one with the round cylindrical motor.

This is my late Dad's car and I learned to drive on it in 1969 so I know nearly all the history pretty well, but it must have had some repair work done on it in the past when I wasn't watching. :blush:


Yay! Another unknown off the list. I think it is now the only part left that I could not determine its authenticity.

Not quite Joel. I have a 70 bug (chassis number 110,2xxx,xxx), built 3 June 1970, then assembled in Aus in Sept 1970, which I bought brand new, and it still has it's original round wiper motor with splined shafts.

My 68 (chassis number 118,xxx,xxx) has the oval 12v wiper motor and fixed position shafts with grub screw.

Rob, does your 70 have the splined shaft wiper arms or the grubscrew ones?

my april 70 bug had the oval motor with grub screw wiper arms..

a mate had 2 june 70 1500s, one was a semi auto so fully imported and had the interior light above the door the other was an aussie built manual and had the interior light above the B pillar, a small difference we noticed between the 2.
