Cant switch off ignition
gvangalen - October 20th, 2017 at 06:14 AM

Hi ,

I drove my 67 bug to work today and when switching off ignition , the beast would not switch off. I removed key and reinserted but couldn't switch it off. I removed HVT lead to stop it .
I gather its the ignition switch but can it be repaired?

thanks G

Anything can be fixed as long as you pick the right part but being the ignition switch just replace it .

Don't JUST remove the HT lead. You need to pull the + lead from the + terminal of the coil -- i.e the lead that comes from the Ign. switch (the other one goes to the dist.). Otherwise the coil will remain on (probably burn out and/or flatten battery). Make SURE this + lead doesn't & can't touch any metal nearby (put something over it to insulate). On earlier models this lead doesn't run via a fuse (from memory).
