1600 TP Carby Options
gregory - September 16th, 2018 at 07:21 PM

Advice needed..
1600 TP with a 34 PICT-3 carby and 009 distributor.

The car has always run well, BUT, the carby goes out of tune easily. Have put a few kits through it, can have it running beautifully for a month or so, then it will start to play up again. Needing the fuel and volume screws adjusted regularly.

Is there an alternative carby for it? One that won't break the bank....

Hi Gregory
That all seems a bit strange, they don't usually go "out of tune" like that. There may be something else wrong. How are the rubbers between the manifold and the end castings, they can look OK but leak air through cracks etc. End casting to head gaskets need to be properly sealed and tight too. has it got a brake booster, is the diaphragm or its pipes in good condition and not leaking air in. Of course make sure the springs are tight and the adjusting needles don't rattle around. Check the butterfly shaft, is it so badly worn it lets air in? There are carby upgrades available :-

And replacement standard carbs :-

All available from many Australian suppliers, not just that US site.
Then there's the 009 distributor, not really good for street use with a standard carb. You should have an SVDA distributor, gets rid of that nasty flat spot, makes all the difference.

Good luck

Tony is correct, the other item to check are the rubber "O" rings on the idle screws these deteriorate and will allow the screws to change with engine vibrations.

I have had this issue before and it was O rings

Definitely PICT and not come cheap copy

Thanks for the info.....

Tried an SVDA on it, but only ran worse. Would not idle properly. Felt like it was sucking air.
Have replaced the inlet manifold rubbers, and gaskets. Also checked the manifold mating surface was flat.
When slowing down approaching a stop sign or intersection, the engine will almost stall, then recovers, and idles. But not always!

my guess is there is something else the matter

any chance you can borrow a known good carb?

Change the O Rings on the carby screws get genuine ones that are fuel resistant

Sometimes Dave it is easier to "dick around" asking the same question with the same result than to take the advice offered and rectify the problem.

Thanks guys.
Cannot get hold of a good carby, which would save a lot of guess work.

Will try to get some o rings and see what happens....

Mate the "O" rings are in the carby gasket kit.
