My Grey '62
Nickster - August 15th, 2008 at 07:53 PM

Here's my 1962 Beetle, bought in Sydney and driven up to Brissie last weekend. I'm trying to get her through the safety certificate and onto QLD plates.
I'm looking forward to revitalising her, eventually giving her a fresh coat of paint and new upholstery & carpet.
What do you think?

nice work, lovely colour

Give Custom Vee Dub a ring on Monday morning and we can do an inspection and RWC if all is OK

Nickster - August 15th, 2008 at 08:56 PM

originally it was anthracite - a greeny grey, but a previous owner painted it battleship grey on the outside only. I'm thinking of putting it back to the original colour.. inside and out!

Nickster - August 15th, 2008 at 08:58 PM

and the pics are deceptive, she has a few scrapes and dents, but by the time I'm 46 I reckon I'll have a few battle scars too!

Yes i thought it was Anthracite from the pics too...
My father used to call it Elephant grey... lol

Car looks great.. inside and out , and if it looks good in the pics it will look great driving about the streets...

Is it an aussie made beetle?
plate under the spare tyre/wheel..

I believe it is an aussie made beetle as the wipers are parked on the right...

original sized narrow clear front blinkers...

is it still 6 volt??

always been a big fan of the grey ! now drop it on its guts lets roll !!

Nickster - August 16th, 2008 at 11:34 PM

It's been converted to 12 volt and came with all the original sales documents, instruction manual etc. Spot that the passenger side blinker is positioned closer to the headlight.... something not right there I think...

I'm from the UK originally and I'm amazed at the quality of the older VW's over here, much more solid with less rust

phatratpat - August 16th, 2008 at 11:41 PM

no salt on the roads here my friend !

mikew - August 18th, 2008 at 06:56 PM

i would believe the indicator being closer to the light would mean a changed guard at some point as i have the same on my car but the closer one on my 67 is from a 63. which is correct for the year im unsure?

she's a looker though, nice purchase!!

LukeV85 - August 25th, 2008 at 04:36 PM

Thats a 62 and a half, the aussie made bug, i have one too in aqua green, all is original. Keep the old girl original as can be, not many in that condition now days

Thanks, finally got her registered in QLD colours :) am looking forward to taking her to our first swap meet to pick up some parts & accessories v:)

Anyone know when the next 'gathering' is in the Brissie area??

Nickster - November 1st, 2008 at 09:15 PM

My '62 is going strong, haven't done a great deal to her since last posting, except drive and enjoy!
I did get round to visiting Mick at Micks Motors to get a new pair of runners, a horn badge and a couple of seals. Spotted a beautiful roof rack just sat there begging to be bought. Will need to save a bit before I return!!

original (?) radial tyre

Nickster - November 1st, 2008 at 10:06 PM

Little Nipper transistor radio... sounds great, even if it's AM radio and the sound comes from just one tiny speaker!

Nickster - November 1st, 2008 at 10:07 PM

colour coded speedo.. it sits nicely on yellow!

A beetle doesn't have to be perfect to be enjoyed

the early beetles had the narrow blinkers placed close to the inner edge..

when they were changed to the wide blinkers in 1964
they were also moved outwards..

1962 VW year model beetles were made from 1st August 1961 to 31st July 1962
after that they were 1963 models...

You can pick up at swap meets or on ebay
early KMH speedos as used in Germany etc..

cheers

Lee

68AutoBug - November 1st, 2008 at 10:43 PM

Engine is a later model...

the 1962 year model had the early type hot engine air heater - NOT the clean air heaters you have with the fresh air tubes... either side of the fan shroud-

Carburetor looks like a later larger model and the distributor looks like a bosch 009...
12 volt larger generator..

its a twin port engine - 1300 or probably a 1600 ?? engine..

spare tyre looks really strange in the sidewalls...
definately NOT a normal 155 x 15 inch radial tyre...

looks more like a space saver spare tyre...
maybe 135 x 15..??

Original is best....

As Lee says the engine looks like it may be a twin port 1600 with the big carby air filter & heater set up,the tyre is probably a 5.60x15 cross ply possibly B F Goodrich or Firestone which were fairly plentiful back in that era, radial tyres weren't a big seller or as readily available. The other option for the speedo conversion is a sticker to go on the outside of the glass.

Joel - November 2nd, 2008 at 08:13 PM

engine is most likely a 71 1600 superbug motor
its running a replacement 1300 carb on 1600 manifold with an adapter plate too
