Hi Everyone
looking to purchase a splitty but since unregistered am having trouble checking the chassis number on Vic Roads site. Is this normal since its been unreg for along time. Also Chassis starts with 237 so do i guess its a Kombi 1967?

Hi Everyone
Hoping you can help me with working out the year, sorry no pics available.
Serial number starts with 237
Has double doors
13 windows (11 if you count the side and passenger driver 2 part windows as one)
Split screen

Let me know if you need any other info, from what ive read the 7 in the serial number means 1967 /1957?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Probably 67.
Does the front have indicators that a about 100mm accross. Look kinda like fried egg shaped?
If so then it would be 67.

Yes, the three-digit model-model-year sequence at the start of the chassis numbers didn't start until the '65 model year, so earlier than that they were only consecutive numbers. The first digit = 2, for VW Type 2. The second digit = 3, for Kombi (window van). The third digit = 7 for the year.

It COULD be a 1977, but the body differences will be obvious.

VW Chassis numbers (noting the Australian market) are documented here:

237 could be feb 1957 but yeah pics would help.
Large fried egg indicators could be all years 64 and up.

Thanks heaps, yes the indicators are like perfect egg round shapes.

Yep not a 57 then

It would have been a remarkable fluke, as 1957-model Transporters had chassis numbers between 223218 and 315209 ! Conly consecutive numbers then, no date data in them.
