Porsche Gearboxes
_666_ - March 17th, 2009 at 05:17 PM

ok so im looking porsche gearboxes, possibly for a V8 but if not for a standard Kombi engine, do they need a conversion plate ?, and which are the ones that fit ?

Thanks, Nick

OZ Towdster - March 17th, 2009 at 05:23 PM

Do you realise that you need to cut the centre area out of your rear torsion housing to fit one of these babies , not to mention the price , If your planning on mabey just keeping the type 4 engine why not just upgrade the kombi box stock gears to a full set of Albins gears .

vw54 - March 17th, 2009 at 05:38 PM

as per above lots of expense

1st buying the egarbox

2nd doing the conversion n body work

3rd buying the adaptor plate

What are you hopeing to gain from the conversion if its just fora streeter then stick with some albins gears

_666_ - March 17th, 2009 at 05:38 PM

well the price wasnt too bad.. found a 911 5 speed for $1500 US so for a 5 speed, im not complaining..

_666_ - March 17th, 2009 at 05:40 PM

its a streeter, but i like the custom sound and having something different, plus i wanted 5th gear, for long trips

vw54 - March 17th, 2009 at 05:44 PM

how OLD is the 911

you really ned to TEST drive the gearbox B$ buying it so as to see if it dont crunch jump of dont work and need an overhaul that will cost you 10 times the origional cost of the gearbox

yes that 5th gear is nice but sometimes the expense aint worth it

you will have to get the gear shift and floor section as well to weld into yr car FARK lots of work aint easy

_666_ - March 17th, 2009 at 06:17 PM

oh really? gear shifter as well ?well no one mentioned that to me..

hellbugged - March 17th, 2009 at 06:23 PM

and check the ratios first, you might find the fifth gear is good for 160 km/h PLUS! and not much good for 100km/h

_666_ - March 17th, 2009 at 06:37 PM

hmm theres a cheap 924 4 speed available.. for those in the know, would that be suitable ?

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE - March 21st, 2009 at 10:49 PM

no good.

vwjon - March 22nd, 2009 at 09:57 AM

why dont you buy my 5 speed caravelle box? it does exactle the same as any porsche box, it will fit without the chopping etc, pm me if you are interested (in perth WA not usa!)

924 front engined rear wheel drive porsche, dont go there!

_666_ - March 23rd, 2009 at 07:55 AM

ah ok i wasnt aware, and caravelles fit hey ? then why dont people just use them ? :S

Hmmmm..............i would look into that a LOT closer

I think you will find the VW 5 speed first is like an under drive rather than 5th being an overdrive

kroozzn63 - March 23rd, 2009 at 10:03 AM

hmm yeah i guess we are all looking for a 100km cruiser gear and a newish strong box would be better than a rebuilt 4 speed ?? for the ratio/price factor is the caraveele box the answer say if u were to put a bomodor v8 in a kombi ,would this be the one for price reliablity /price ??

TheMiniMan - March 26th, 2009 at 08:03 AM

well,,, Albins do make taller ratio gear kits,,, mine is a .7 : 1 overdriven top gear, so it`s waaaay tall & suits my alloy V8 quite well,,,, it`s happy to just trundle along the hyway at low revs , conserving fuel & keeping noise down to a minimum,,, altho i obviously have the grunt to pull it,,, most stock 2L kombi engines wouldn`t be able to pull that sort of ratio, especially with the 31.5" rear tyres i have.

Talk with Albins before you do anything i suggest because they do gears for both VW & Porsche boxes, so they will be able to help you with ratios to suit whichever box you choose

_666_ - March 26th, 2009 at 08:17 AM

geeeze.. have you got a pic of your beast ? 31.5" tyres FWoah !

TheMiniMan - March 26th, 2009 at 11:16 PM

ha,,, 31.5" ,,, that`s nothin , it used to have 33s on it,,, i`m pretty sure there are others out there like John Alder & co , & i think Andrew (AKA custom Vee Dub) who have even bigger

This is mine--->

& yeah that`s me havin a little snooze under it after fixing a brake hose that was ripped out by a log/tree-trunk thing,,, Oh My my boxer dog "Bruno" in the foreground :-) No one came near that car when he was sitting at the wheel :-)

matberry - March 27th, 2009 at 08:30 AM

I thought dogs take after thier owners.

How come Bruno has a better look'n melon than his owner :lol::lol:

TheMiniMan - March 28th, 2009 at 12:14 AM

he is a little cutie isn`t he ? :-)

he used to suck people in to pat him... wagging his tail & lookin real cute & cuddly,,, then when they walked over to the car he`d just go off in a big way & scare the crap out of you :-),,, no one ever even came close to stealing "Anything" from me :-)

poor old fella made it to 15 years old & thyen developed some super rare bone cancer in his right shoulder & we had to put him down,,, the vet said he was dead & then he kicked back to life when i cuddled him,,, had to give the poor bugga another shot,,, tough as nails he was... he (quite commonly) jumped through the window from a 2 story house to run across wynnum rd at Galloways hill/norman Pk,,, run up to a house with a great dane,,, stand on the 2nd step of the front stairs & plug the dane,,, the owner actually liked him & kept him there till i was home from work so he wouldn`t get run over by a car trying to get home or anything,,, then, after a few days of him getting his rocks off he decided he owned the place, so he p!$$ed on her mega dollar lounge suit,,, wouldn`t let her in her own front door & i got the nasteyest call i`ve ever got, telling me to come get this delinquent mongrel F#$@en dog & don`t let him come back here ever again etc etc etc :-) very much like his owner hey??? :-)

Best dog i ever had :-(

20bkombi - March 29th, 2009 at 07:17 PM

Farrrrrrr to much work to fit a porsche box in a kombi for any thing under 350rwph!
A 2L box with Albins diff and 1234 gears could be a little expensive but, you will have all NEW gears and way less work than cutting up your bus.

Just a few pics of mine.

20bkombi - March 29th, 2009 at 07:27 PM

But i couldn't go past the sheer size 2L kombi to 993 porsche.

Speak to Dave buttler for a 091 rebuild, he will need to know your future plans to get your ratios right the first time.

TheMiniMan - March 31st, 2009 at 10:55 PM

Hey Aaron,,, that kombi mainshaft looks like it still has gears/teeth on it ,,, wow!!! that`s rare :-)

20bkombi - April 8th, 2009 at 05:11 PM

Just one of the lucky ones that didn't find it's way behind the 20B:lol:
Unlike this pinion that I munched in mid 2nd gear!

How's the bus coming along? The one that you were thinking of making 4WD.

TheMiniMan - April 10th, 2009 at 04:34 PM

Yeah i have a few pinions like that one :-)

The 4x4 idea hasn`t been shelved,,, just parked for a while,,, i got a Syncro front diff & Austin Kimberly front drive wheel assys,,, just need to get the 091 box modded for a front output shaft & i`ll start playing :-)

Is your beast back together & running again ,,, where & when`s the next drag meet for you?

20bkombi - April 19th, 2009 at 07:48 AM

Sounds good, I thought the same but using audi front end. Shouldn't be to hard to make a sleave for the pinion shaft to mount an other out put. let me know when your starting the box mods, would like to have a look at your setup.

My box is still apart, but have all the parts to fix.On the 25 July will be putting the bus on the dyno for 'dyno mania' at leon's motors, then up to willowbank for a run.
After that it will be Warwick 3-4 Oct, can't wait!!!
