Removal of ignition switch
Joels72Lowlight - November 7th, 2009 at 08:35 AM

Gdy guys.
Im having a bit of a problem.
LAst night I completely unhooked and unbolted the ignition switch.
Then It came to sliding it off the steering pole. I moved it up a bit but it now doesn't want to go any further. And now my the black tubing around my steering column keeps pulling out when I pull to hard on the ignition case.
Here are some pics. Does anone have any tips for getting it off?

If the steering lock is not engaged, it should come off.
It's supported in the housing by a large rubber bush. You may have to take out the top circlip and washer to make it easier. Clean the top of the column and use some lube and the housing should twist off the column.

Old Dubber- Your a legend. I'll have a crack at it tomorrow.

VW Mad- Do you mean pull the black steering shaft housing off the shaft and then pull the ignition off the bottom?

to get the electrical part of the switch out there is a little plain blade screwdriver grub screw ,as i had mine out of my 73 when i first got it ,till i got a key cut:tu:

No I just want to take the whole thing out. I have done it before but I cant think what I did to make it come straight off.

That's the easy bit (the grub screw and electrical part of the switch). But how do you get the key barrel out?

I have an early '74 that I needed to disassemble the other weekend to test whether the electrical side or key barrel side of the set-up was letting the team down and not let me start my bus. I got as far as pulling everything out, removed the grub screw (and managed not to lose it!), took out the electrical switch, and then... brick wall! I couldn't get the barrel out for the life of me!

I found two flat-blade larger grub screws that I removed, but still could not get the lock assembly out of its home. Was a little frustrating...
