The Marauder
Vanders - April 9th, 2012 at 08:00 PM

I've been keeping this under my hat for so long I thought I would burst, but it has finally hapenned so I can post some info up. I have just taken posession of a fibreglass body mould for a replacement body for a Type 3 called the Marauder.

The Marauder is a body shape based on a Ferrari Dino, and is made to bolt to a Type 3 floorpan. They were commercially made a decade or two ago in Adelaide before the company wound up and the moulds were stored. I stumbled across the owner of the mould last year and ordered a body from the mould, but it couldn't be fulfilled and I was offerred the mould instead. Over Easter we went and picked it up and bought it home, and I'm super impressed by both the quality and the design.

I won't go into it too much now as I'll build a proper website about it and the build I'm embarking on, but here are some photos of the mould, the last body produced from the mould, and an article from a kit car magazine that gives some details.

So you got the mould from Murray Bridge High Scool??

Vanders - April 10th, 2012 at 02:48 PM

Yep. The school was no longer running the composites programme so the owner of the mould had to move it and he didn't have any room.

Thats awesome!

The blue one above was one of two prototypes built by Dennis Bedford and they were simply called a DRB. He and a mate built 1 each.
When he relocated to QLD the moulds were sold off, changed a little and they were then known as a Maruader.

I really love the shape. One of the nicest kit cars around.

I think most of the changes were in the tail. In the photos of the mould you can see an extra panel sitting on top of the frame. Apparantly they changed to rear panels to give a rounder shape to the rear without the mini-fins that you can see in the blue car. The extra panel is the old shape, and comes with a few extras for the fins.

It's going to be a lot of work, but having the moulds means we can start with a new body that hasn't been hacked or repaired.

If anyone hs any information on the history of the Marauder then I'd be really keen to hear it. I'm going to put together a website about it, and my build project.

With some race style bolt on fender flares and deep dish BBS wheels..these would be a really nice looking kit car..:tu:

But I'd pity the poor person covered in fibreglass chop/mat and resin rolling out every layer unless you spray in all the chop..

Didn't say I was doing the glassing myself. :)

The car on ebay went for $2500 with one bid. I think it was a bargain.

Welcome, brother! I've met Denis on a couple of occasions after buying my Sabre MK2 about 6 years back. DRB did manufacture the Marauder in QLD in very small numbers (5 or 6) before they sold the molds. I have a fair whack of info and design drawings/MPV approval papers from a couple of DRB cars. Denis now runs copycatcars.com (Yes, he is still at it!).

If I recall, there is an AVD'er with an unfinished, one-off factory Sabre MK2 T-top down in Tassie.
