Regulator wiring help please!

Hi, we are in the process in getting this 67 bug back on the road. It did not come with a motor and we are trying to work out how to hook up the motor we have. In other early bugs I have worked on the regulator has either been on top of the generator or under the back seat. The motor we have doesn't have one and there is what looks like a regulator under the dash. Dies anyone have any ideas on what we should do? Thanks in advance. I'll try and post pics.

The generator looks like a 12 volt one from a later model, the regulator under the dash is off a Holden or Ford. So I assume that someone has done a 12v conversion and with a flash of genius fitted the reg behind the dash. My suggestion is take it to an auto electrician and get him to fit a VW regulator in the engine bay and remove the bodgy unit or fit an alternator with an inbuilt regulator and again remove the bodgy unit, this is assuming it has been converted to 12volt if not fit a 6 volt generator with the regulator on top of it.

Think you might be correct Hellbugged. Could be an elaborate headlight relay. If I was to set up a new regulator on top of the generator. I only have the 2 wires as seen in the pic. The green and yellow. They would go into one side of the regulator. Would the other side of the regulator go to the idiot light, the ignition switch and the starter spade connector or the starter post?

.

So it is a headlight relay yeah ?
Looks like the yellow wires connected and routed off down to headlight looms in the pics I looked at . The red ones turn into those black dodgy joining blocks and head off to each side too

Where does the large yellow wire in engine bay come from ? (The loom on left side of engine bay?)

Yep. Yellow and green come in through the fire wall to the left of the distributor.
