74 rat panel

Thought I would say hello and show my new purchase. I'm new to kombis and I grabbed this one off a mate. There is a few threads of her sale from last year so I pinched a couple of photos and added them to my collection.
Will add more as I go.
http://m1278.photobucket.com/albums/Perezoso168/?src=www

She is in the panel shop just now getting a few dings out and a clear coat put on.

Just got the panelvan washed rust treated and a clear skin put on her, come up pretty good I reckon.
I'm no good at down sizing photos and stuff so just keep adding them to my photo bucket folder.

Now going to focus on the inside.

Yupp, 17 inch brm's.

Lolshush! It's cheaper than buying those drop spindle things.

I'm a fan of the the rusty old stock wheel in the weeds look. Screw polishing stuff.

What kinda donk you running Dan?

Hey Pogo, if by Donk you mean engine its a 2litre, (I'm only new to this Kombi stuff) Just had new carbs put in that I got from CIP so cannae wait to get in and give her a run.

The inside is totally empty noting but shell so the mind is racing as to how I want to go ahead with it, just waiting on my seat so I can get all the colours right.

Ross I live on the coast so getting the surface rust sorted, so it didn't spread was a must, she was washed back then por15 sprayed on.

Hopefully funds pending I will be starting on the inside, even though the wife was pretty keen on getting some nice rims first!!

Been awhile since I've added anything on the bus.
I've put a new engine in, bought off here, http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=101491
That's the link and she runs a treat.
Got new seats so no more cruising on klaus's milk crates and dynamated the floor and engine bay.
Wow I now feel like a stealth brick getting around compared to the noisy tin can it was before.
Few photos added to photo bucket link up top.

Lowering the front what are my options?
New at this so please bare with me. I have seen the front beam adjusters on Indian automotive but also heard about a adjustable narrowed beam.
Any help would be great, just want to drop her a bit both front and back but know I need adjustable spring plates for the back just lost a bit on the front.

Judging by the photos - I would say your van has already been lowered a couple of inches.

Otherwise an adjustable front beam would be enough if you dont want silly low and your wheels dont have off-set issues. Otherwise narrown the bean slightly.

There are also flipped spindle set ups (transporterhaus) which lower to a certain height only (I think about 3 inches) and still provide good suspension travel.

Lowered adjustable beams remove suspension travel so the bump stops get a work out (One of mine snapped right off the crappy welding that was done by a workshop on the Central Coast).

Best of luck with your plans - loev your bus.

I have already fitted adjusters to your beam , you either need to get drop spindles 2.5 inch or the transporterhaus ones or t2d's ones which are the flipped ball joint ones not spindle, other option is fit a narrowed split beam which will tuck very nicely and will get a lot lower than a bay beam these can have the spindles flipped ..or narrow the bay beam as any lower and your tyres will scrub

Thanks guys for all the info, the stuff from transporterhaus look good just getting them out here.
Klaus the beam we spoke about is another option just don't think I'll have the cash by the time your mate wants rid of it.
All good though will keep my eyes and ears open.

Scott I'm just around the corner at forries, surprised I haven't seen you bus about.

I'd stay away from the Transporterhaus spindles, I've had mine on for a while now but I had to modify them to work properly and they're still not ideal. The owner of the company, Alex is pretty useless and rarely answers emails but is very quick to take your money. I know of a number of people that paid for parts which didn't turn up for over 6 months.
They do give a good ride though and aren't the cut and welded variety like most of them. Maybe Type 2 Detectives give better service, they're essentially the same spindles.

I've also got Transporterhaus adjustable springplates on my DC, they had to be modified as well just to fit. I'd go for Creative adjustables if I was doing it again.

Anyway, just my experiences, your panel looks sweet

Another question for you Scott is who, if you got it done did your upholstery on the coast?
I have heard good things about a guy in kincumber call Scott but not much else.
Got a RnR bed to get covered and some door trims.

there will be haters.

http://airsouls.com/how-tos/raised_spindles.htm

these are raised spindles but same idea.

Get someone who knows their way around welding to do it. Penetration is key. I would chamfer and bevel for maximum penetration.. The guy in this article thinks he knows what he's talking about; he's referring to stick MMA welding by saying ARK welding. Stick = stronger is bullocks, since the flux coating on stick electrode introduces more contaminants to the steel and softens the weld. A qualified fabricator on a trade level MIG/TIG machine will know the correct procedure to weld them as strong as before and will carefully quench the spindles leaving them as stout as ever.

Hi Dan,
Another one of karls vw,s sold. Nice pick up there!
I saw this at the paint shop next to wizstixs shop at long jetty an wondered who owned it.
If youve sprayed it with por15 clear its not uv resistant so not sure how long its going to last. There new paint range brochure has a hotrod with it sprayed on bare metal until there ready to do the paint job. So if its not parked in a garage you might need to keep the wax up or try anchor wax to seal it.
East coast kombi,s sprayed the rat bus with the bare metal an check roof with 5 coats of clear 2 pac.
Still has some rusty patina coming through although its now in qld or melbourne an i havent seen it for a while.
scott is trading as master trim at kincumber is doing a lot of kombi trimming. ph 0412 197 830.
see you round on the coast.

Hey 4 kombiswilldo, thanks for the heads up with por15, she is the lucky car of the family and is kept in the garage. Will keep an eye on it and even put some Ankor wax on it.
I have dropped my seat down with Scott and found out whilst down there he does a lot of work on RnR beds and for east coast kombis.
What kind of kombi are you driving about in so I can keep an eye out whilst cruising around the coast?

hey dan,
Just sold my wattle yellow single 75 ute so you might of seen that around on the coast.
Currently driving a blue with white roof 71 deluxe an just finishing off my white 69 bus which should be on the road in the nexy few weeks.
Have a few others sitting around, including a splitty or two which are getting the rground up rebuild treatment.
Scotts at Mastertrim has been doing alot of kombi retrimming in the last 5 years or so.
I saw a complete interior panel an seats retrim that he,s done for east coast just a few weeks ago an was impressed with his finish.

cheers

Well I got the seats trimmed by Scott at master trim and they look and feel awesome. Highly recommend him to any dubbers out on the coast. I've out the RnR Bed in with a bamboo floor but now taken it all back out as she is in the paint shop getting the inside done.
I also mentioned that the por15 has burnt off the roof and they are getting the rep around as he told them it was the best stuff going. She is now covered in Ankor wax but the sides have been unaffected by the sun.

Fingers crossed next post she will be sprayed and trimmed inside.
Few more photos on the photo bucket link up top.
