Child seat anchor points in a bay window Kombi?


My 73 bay is fitted with just the rear seat not the middle seat, so I'm looking at fitting a couple of child seat anchor points somewhere on top of the rear "hump". I need to compliance the rear seat so want to do the anchors at the same time so I only need one modplate fitted.

So firstly, are there any factory points that I do not know about, ie down behind the back seat etc?

Where abouts have others installed these? I gather they would have to go on the wider corrugation that is behind each side of the seat since a flat even and level mount would be better.

Pics of yours would be helpful too and any tips/suggestions.

I had some done in the back just behind the rear seat. They put them just above the rear inspection hatch close to the seat. Installer drilled a hole so it was accessable in engine comparment and put the ankor hook and bolts etc there. Laws may have changed since then as that was back around 2000. No factory points that i know of, i've had a quick look in my 73 and i can not find any?

We have two mounts in our bus. They need to be far enough back that the strap angle is not too sharp. The approved bolt anchor fitting kits are available from any car parts or baby supplies shop.

These mounts are about 25cm from the rear opening, and 33cm from the side.

just got a wack from the wifey....thanks for the pic hellbus, boss wife said our one was the same it wasn't near the seat but other side of the inspection hatch.

Ha ha. Happy wife happy life eh?

My wife gets funny looks turning up to drop the Prep son at school (only on a few rainy days as she walks the 1.6km most days). Turns up in the VW bus one day, the VW Beetle another day, and even my EH Holden a few days. LOL. They stand out amongst the Kluger, Territory and Voyager.

Points are in and all complianced. Got hold of 3 plates with the nut welded on - these were freebies, 3 high tensile bolts and riveted in.

Awesome guy to deal with who did the inspection/mod plate - he came to me on a Saturday morning and inspected the seat and 3 child seat anchors, issued the mod plate and certificate all for $110 the lot. Cheaper than the places where you have to take the vehicle in. Has been doing seating certs for a long time and knows the law back to front. Seems to know his VWs too.

Barryan Accessory Fitting in case you want to know. You can google his number but I can give him a big thumbs up. He mostly does seating and rollbar certs, child anchors and crab bars etc.

He's based at Deception Bay/Narangba area on the north side of Brisbane but I believe he travels a fair way in either direction.

Are you sure there is a requirement for the strap angle? I put mine almost straight down which replicates what is in my Corolla wagon and doesn't impinge on the room behind the rear seat. This seems to comply with the ADR Figure 6. Some cars seem to have the mounting point on the back of the seat.

The main consideration from a legal perspective is that the bay kombi seats are not capable of load bearing on the seat back and are not rated to do so, most newer seat backs in vans and wagons etc are, so the straps are not allowed to ride over and put pressure on the beck of the seat. In an accident the seat back can break making the child seat loose and you have a big problem. Mine touches but puts no pressure on it so is ok, some baby seats make full contact so if the anchor point is directly below the seat back, the straps go over the seat back and put constant strain on the seat. The same baby seat in our Nissan Xtrail goes down directly behind the seat and actually angles towards the front of the car, so is fully in contact with the back seat.

Cars with mounts attached to the back seat have stronger mounts on the floor for the seat as well as a stronger structure internally.

The other consideration is access. The plates need fitting from the rear so unless the engine is out and/or the fuel tank cover is removed and this still makes it hard, mounting further back is simpler. Yes it impacts on load space but not by much, no more than an anchor point in a hatch back where it is attached right at the back below the tailgate lip. And there are plenty of other spaces to stash stuff in a Kombi.

My anchor points are not as far back as those pictured, probably more towards the front of the engine cover just next to the front most corners on both sides plus just in front of it in the centre.
