Dove Blue, Golf Blue and Sea Blue paint colours

Hi Everyone,
I am only a few days away from painting my 67 and I am having a heap of problems with paint colours. My painter is using De Beer and I have asked him to mix up Dove Blue, Golf Blue and Sea Blue. All three colours came out nothing like I would have expected. I had many photos of cars from many sites and they also differ quite a lot. My painter explained that different paint brands will have different looks but this has made it even harder to narrow down a colour.
If anyone out there has a car painted in any of these three colours I would be gratefull if you could put a photo of it on this post so that I may narrow my search.
Thanks in advance, Al.

Paint colour shouldn't 'vary' between brands. The colour is meant to match...simple.

Post a pic of the 3 samples he sprayed for you, maybe people can help.

A small sample is easily mucked up as the quantities of individual colours involved in the mix can be so small that descrepencies in the final colour start to show up. My car is Dove Blue to the best of my knowledge, but look at these pics and the camera changes the colour depending on the light, also they may apear deferent on your puter screen than on mine......

(Had a few other examples to post yo show variation but photobucket in being a pain...maybe later)

Hi Matt, your colour is exactly what I'm after and I would have thought that it was either Dove Blue (top photo looks like it has more grey) or Golf Blue (bottom photo looks like it has more green) . The dove blue that he mixed for me is very grey and no where near as blue as yours. Also I used to be a spraypainter and I watched him mix the colour and he did everything correct to within a milligram. He even scrapped the sides to make sure that all of the colours were mixed in. To be honest, I learnt when I worked in a panel shop, that there is a difference between brands however the difference should only be minor and should be easily fixed with a small amount of tinter. The colour he showed me would have required a lot of tinting to get back to what I would have thought Dove Blue should have been.
Your Beetle looks great Matt and only only hope mine looks as good when I'm done. Oh, and no my Beetle was not originally blue, it was a dark green colour.

I got some gulf blue mixed (auto bahn) for my split not long ago and it was way different. the only closest i could was dove blue which is like Mattys (luv that colour) and it seemed the best match. Like those wheels Matty what do you think they would look like on a split ;)

Thanks for the nice comments guy's
The 2 pics above demonstrate the difficulty of photos and colours, how camera's can make things difficult.

Oh and Tarin, I already know about your new wheels mate ;)

Just quickly, It's all has to do with the pigment alot of colours will be different with paint companies , you will find direct gloss will be different to base coat even with same paint code. Good colour pigment is running out around the world , due to VOC .

I chose to go single pack paint and provide a guy at slacks creek (Bris) the glove box lid to match colour. Mine is a very similar blue to Matts above. I have a 1960 bug. At about $300to paint mine it's not about colour its about paint/ rust protection for me for now until I win the lotto. I do have some original posts of my car and colour. dunno what my original colour is but its a dark blue. Not dove. Get the best colour you can find and trust a brand i guess.

Being a former spraypainter I know a little about the subject and they are not running out of pigment but merely looking to reduce the amount of Volitile Organic Compounds (VOC) in paints. This is to help reduce the paints toxicity levels and make them safer to use. You are right though that the formulas are different from company to company due to their individual pigments differing, however this does not help my situation and makes it very difficult to find colours correct to the original.

Was trying to help with the reasons original colours from 60 /70 era have changed with to days formulas . VOC in a lot direct Gloss was lead ,they still use lead in some pigment but the density of the pigment has changed .Once a tinter is discontinued some chemist writes up a new formula .
The largest pigment supplier was in Japan and the factory got cleaned up in the tsnumai .
I have painted a couple a volkeys in sea blue in BASF Glasurit with good results. Glasurit has a a great colour chip collection which may be of some use.

Thanks for the photos Olly. They both look really good. I would expect that with Glasurit though, I used it only a couple of times and it had great coverage and excellent gloss. We only tested it for a short time and the shop decided it was too expensive and we returned to Dulux / PPG. That was 15 years ago. As with all things you only get what you pay for. We will probably be putting down the first coats of colour this weekend (interior and inner guards).
I have decided on Dove Blue and I think it will just come down to adjusting the mix and keeping a record of the changes to the original formula. I will be taking as many photos as I can and hopefully we will find a mid point between all of the different versions. Trevor, the painter, has been in the game for an extreamly long time and he knows his product so I'm sure I'll be happy with the result.
Maybe I'm trying to hard to be faithfull to the original, however obviously I'm not being to faithfull since I'm pretty sure that Dove Blue was a Bus colour anyway.

Only just read your thread.

My Beetle is a blue 66/67 - it is the darker blue, VW Blue... I think. It was a popular colour in 1967!

Dove blue, it has become the quintessential VW colour!
Your '67 will look boss.
