Bolt on Turnkey (Complete) EFI System for Type 1


Hi Guys

I have spent a bit of time Googling and hunting around forums looking for a turnkey EFI System for a Type 1 engine and have found CB Performance ( http://www.cbperformance.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=7070 ).

Are there any others and are they any good??

i read some where that a guy was having troubleturning a kit like that or simillar ccb.
just buy a pair of webber off of rod ,

The CB performance set is very good, a friend of mine runs one, he started out as just fuel injected and then put a turbo on it, he has had good support from CB performance and it runs great, i will probably be purchasing one shortly for my next project, this also will be blow through turbo.

You could also talk to Mario Veletta at The Dub Shop over in the us, he sells Megasquirt based systems, just Google The Dub Shop.

Mario is very easy to deal with.

I had megasquirt on my last car and would happily do that again, but I wouldn't get my gear off mario at dubshop, if only for the fact that he's too far away to help much.


Tuning EFI is complicated and time consuming to do well, finding a tuner who knows what they are doing is the hard part, most of the various brands are ok. Just make sure your fuel system is adequate for your application as well. Rod has a very good tuner he can put you in touch with.

Not that I'm aware of. I bought the kit for the computer from diyautotune.com and the rest of the bits and pieces from mario @ dubshop. At the time I thought it was easier to get all the odds and ends in one hit from mario rather than try and scrape everything together.
Also I wouldn't bother soldering a megasquirt together out of a kit again. It worked fine and I had time to kill on nightshift back then but the prebuilt ones with all surface mount components are a smarter option for not much more money.
Also recommend http://www.wbo2.com  guys in canberra for wideband o2 sensor gear. very helpful, knowledgable and local. Innovate were hopeless when I had issues, which turned out to be ignition interference.

Hi

If these system work as advertised they are bargain.

The hardware is worth the asking price alone.

The only thing that I don't like is the non fuel return to the tank, I would fit a surge tank and lift pump. i guess that they sell it this way so that its a bolt on package

Hi Guys

I've decided to "renovate" the existing EFI setup and get it going on the new engine.

I'll get the injectors serviced and flowed and totally clean all of the crud from the inside of the plenum and manifolds. and check the wiring harness etc.

As I am getting the new Vintage Speed exhaust ceramic coated silver, I am thinking of getting the plenum and manifolds ceramic coated as well primarily to try to reduce the air temps within them...is this considered a good idea?

Hi Greg,

My two cents from experience.

CB Injection - tick! Easy to install and everything just bolts together The only problem I've had is that the injectors weren't big enough (could've been my fault and I ordered too small). The ones I got supplied were 36lb and I've now been to Rocket Industries (with my bank manager!) and have 83lb injectors which work a treat.

Megasquirt - Great! Does everything you need it too, is well supported on the web and is cost effective. I wasn't as brave as Owen and so I bought it pre-assembled, which just required bolting in and connecting the wires. Even for a non-electrical guy like me it was pretty easy.

My only advice is if you are going to get rid of the dizzy and go for something else, STAY AWAY FROM EDIS! It is simple, plug in and solid as a rock, but it won't rev over 6250rpm! If someone can prove me wrong on this, please do because I cannot get it to rev over this and research on various forums tells me this is common :( I would get the megasquirt made for me with the correct motherboard to let it drive the coils, not an EDIS system. If you're never going over 6250rpm, EDIS is fabulous. Cheap, reliable and robust, but she just don't rev!

Anyway, good luck with going EFI, best thing I ever did.

Hi Greg,

EDIS is a Ford product Electronic Distributorless Ignition System. It was on European and US Fords mainly in the 1990's I think. Their versions of Escorts and so on.

You can pick them up on eBay pretty cheap. Great robust set up but they just don't rev enough for me. Looks like I"m going to have to get my Megasquirt reconfigured to drive the coils directly...

Working out injectors is pretty easy, you use a formula. Just Google it and you'll find a few calculators. You need to know what horsepower you're trying to get, how many injecvtors you have, whether it's boosted or not and the type of fuel you're running. Plug the numbers in and it'll tell you what size is required. Mine came out at about 75lbs needed so I just went up to the next size (83lbs) so that it wouldn't be maxing out the duty cycle.

Oh, and the fuel return is pretty easy, you just need to run a line back to the tank from the pressure regulator.

I put mine into the top of the tank. Couple of fitting bits from Rocket Industries and I put it near the filler hole so that I could get my fingers inside to hold the inside part of the fitting!!
