Fitting Gearbox Banana Mounts


Hi guys

Somebody please set my mind at ease.:lol:

Whilst the engine is out of the car I decided to replace the banana mounts on the gearbox as they looked in pretty bad shape. I bought some heavy duty kombi mounts from VVDS and installed them.

Apart from having some drama removing the support bracket the installation went fine. I have a few questions:

1. Does it matter which way the mounts are installed? The 2 "bumps" facing back or should they be facing the other way?

2. The curved steel backing plate of the mounts do not still 100% flush with the support bracket...is this ok?

3. I had quite a time tightening the large support bracket bolts back up and was worried that due to my "hulK" like strength that they would break....any need for me to worry?

4. Also, should there be split washers under the nuts on the banana mounts as there are only flat washers under all nuts?

I have posted a picture so that you can see what I mean.

all of the above is good dosent matter which way the bumps are

only flat washers

wave flat same thing

but yes yr right they should have slight wave for locking purposes

Do we need to get padantic here????

For the hell of the factory fitment, the holes in the support bracket are slotted and originally had 2x flat washers (not wavey lock washers) with a spring washer for security. The bolts into the bell housing have wave washers only.

And I don't think you'll break the big bolts, should be nice and tight.

hmmm, so perhaps I need to double check to see if I I have 4 flat washers for attachment of the mount to the support bracket and 4 wavey washers for attachment of the mount to the bell housing...

I assume that I can get some wavey washers from Repco or Auto 1 stores???

The thin wavey washers are German only I believe. Vintage will have them by the hundred (I do), Wurth are the suppliers and you may find a local workshop that use thier gear, but really not worth loosing any sleep over it. I was just setting the record straight for future reference. The best part using wavey's inside the trans is thier low profile and locking without gauging into the alloy like a spring washer. Happy to post you some if you really want.

I just checked the washers and they seem to be on the "thinish" side of things so they may be wavey washers that have flattened out?

All 8 washers should be wave washers. (VW call them spring washers)
Part# N 012 241 10 Washer B8x15x0.8

These should be available from VVDS or VW/Audi dealers.

What you've done should be fine. If you are worried, put a bit of Locktite on the threads but I've never seen them come loose.
