Well, I was warned that project cars could get expensive. Dropped all unboltables off to the blasters this morning.
The verbal quote I got before Christmas for the whole car to get blasted and primered suddenly turned into the price for the first batch.
Luckily, the doors and guards are the worst of the project, the body and plan don't seem that bad so paint stripper it is!

My trailer isn't that heavy, but with my loaded toolbox in it (as in the photo), it is about 700kgs. I often carry building materials on the top and
on the racks, and can often go over 1000kgs. I have a 1916cc engine in the car. The trailer is built on a Type 111 rear suspension, and both the
trailer and the back of the bug have Sherman disc brake conversions. The front of the bug has standard superbug discs.
Interestingly, I used the trailer for years without the brakes on it with not too many problems, and really only put them on when I was employing more
blokes, and they had utes that struggled with the trailer, especially stopping it in the wet. The rear engine VW is especially good for towing, and
tows far better than a front engined car of similar weight & power.

I gather you've got an extra oil cooler on the car?
P.s. I see you gave Hotondo the flick.
|
Yeah, I have an 8 pass external cooler mounted above the transaxle. My current 1916 has about 160,000km on it. The car is just about to turn
685,000km, and I reckon has done at least half of that towing the trailer.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Hotondo, but when my daughter who was working with me moved onto construction estimating, I didn't want to do it on
my own, and my franchise was up for renewal, so after a talk to them, I didn't renew.

Amazing difference what a cooler makes. Pleased to hear you had a positive time with Hotondo. Another franchisee built the house we live in now.
Overall, we've been very pleased with it, even if there were a few non-building related dramas at the end.
Speaking of oil, I changed mine last night. Seemed like a good idea after the khanacross. As per usual, I managed to spill oil everywhere. I never
learn. Anyhow, it's going again. Calibrated the AFR meter and took it out for a tune just now. Man it goes!

Filled it up with fuel and went over to the nationals for an hour or so. Found this curio. Took me back to my aunt's Fox in the 70s. The badges
usually got nicked so I impressed to find this one in tact.

Cool one that Pete.
Well I did a service on the stock beetle, grease, valve adjustment, brakes........ But only after getting motivated after a cruise to watch a very
yello oval on late pan do a bit of racing at a lap dash.

Took my spare alternator down to my auto elec shop today to have it tested before I put it in (read; pull half the motor apart to install it). All
good! Shout out to John Dean Auto Electrical in Penrith, NSW. Charged me nothing and always helps me out. If you're local, give him some business.
Just BTW, replacement regulators are available now from CIP1 for just $32.
https://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=BOS-9-190-087-003-US
This is usually the part that dies so it's a cheap fix for most of our alternators. I'll pickup another one soon and swap it over into the
alternator I pull out of the car. Does up to 85amps.

Had 8+yo 165 80R 15 tyres on the 5.5Jx15" Mangles so bit the bullet sand put a new set of 205 65R 15 Hankook K425 on.
Thought it would be a good idea to get the Keyfang LT off the spare and put something more modern on = spare with tube is rusted around the valve hole
...... now on the search for a new spare steel wheel 4.5Jx15" 4 x 130 to suit.
Let me out, When I call my name

A mate called me a few weeks back with an ABS plastic replacement glovebox for my oval. He'd bought in the US but forgotten to put it in his oval
before selling it. Needless to say I was super stoked coz the cardboard one is falling to pieces. Being that it was nice and shiny, it only seemed to
right to drill a big hole in it and put a USB charging point.

In other news, I've been struggling with my kirkey seat for a while. Even with a few layers of yoga matt, my backside goes numb fast! Driving my
daughter to school yesterday, I spied an old seat schwab on the side of the road. Having stripped off the old fabric, I cut it down and it fits well.
I'm sitting a little higher than before, but it feels so much better.

Took the Notch for a shopping run. Sounds boring huh!?
112km each way, mostly straight country road, but with some legal speed corners between Caltowie and Gladtone. Always try to hold the speed limit
through the corners just to make the trip fun, its easy in a modern car but tires the arms in the Notch.
As usual it ran well. Loaded groceries in the front which shocks the local Pt Pirie shoppers.
On top of that we're hunting for a small light camper trailer to hook up for weekends away. We missed out on a 1980 Jayco today... Bugger!
Stay tuned...
