So been thread digging.. this motor of my bosses Karmann Ghia has a ap3 cam in it... obviously put in a long time ago when the motor was originally built. Anyone used one?

AP3 cam looks like a nice little mileage cam.
Specs of 264 adv duration would probably give 222-228*@.050 or so depending on the ramp intensity, and .320" over the nose would probably allow 1.25 or possibly 1.4s rockers too, but with a recommended lash of .013" it might be too steep on the bottom, you would have to check the flanks to be sure.

This list of fuel economy cams from CB puts the AP3 bang in the middle.
http://www.cbperformance.com/searchresults.asp?cat=185
Their currently very popular "Cheater" cam is very similar.

If it helps I've used a Norris 352S before for economy motors (10* less adv duration, but slightly more lift), and they rev clean to 5000 on a stone stock motor with completely unaffected idle quality or vacuum. Adds about 3 or 4 mpg and 5mph on a stock standard TP1600.
I rekn the AP3 would probably do similar things.

Having had all in one form or another, the AP3 is the nicest all-round for the street, it was in a built for Buggy 1776cc with Dell centre mount and later twin 36 IDFs, pulled nice and hard but hit a wall @ 5800. After selling the engine it made 73 WHP and 97 WHP with 5-7psi turbo. Was raced in Variety bash in fully loaded heavy bug overtaking V8s up the hills.

Mate just built 1835cc stock modified carby and ported 40x35 heads with AP2 after taking out C35 in 1500 beetle, idles like stock and pulls real nice and crisp.

AP4 in light stroker with short ratios and serious heads is brutal

I remember reading somewhere that AP2 cams badged SP2 were used on the Volkswagen SP2 Brazillian Sports Car which I believe was 1700cc and had poor performance probably due to weight. Good looking car none the less.

Hi
I had an AP3 in a 1835 back in the early eighties
Big valve head not much porting and a 2 barrel carb it was a nice combo but I wished I had gone bigger.

Thanks, this is only going in a mild 1600 motor for the bosses Kg so should be enough for it. He is only a poser anyway...
