vw beetle identification

Hey guys having a bit of dilemma with my project yesterday noticed the compliance plate was upside down and its made me think maybe something shifty has happened in its previous life just wondering what numbers do I need to marry up to make sure its legit before I put more time and money into it. I have the old rego papers from Victoria and has a serial number on it beginning with S any idea what thats about? Its apparently a 76 L bug according to the receipt the lady wrote for me.
Any help would be fantastic it'll be record in nsw if that helps.

well the chassis number is under the rear seat infront of the gear linkage cover plate.

Make sure that matches with your Vic paperwork. If it does then just call Vic transport dept and give em the details of what you have. If there is anything dodgy about the vehicle they should have a record.

I'm not sure if, like the UK, the vehicles licence details are connected to any outstanding finance on the vehicle.

Any compliance plate should have details as to what codes the vehicle needed to comply with. Just like a blue plate.

Hi

Ive seen a few upside down ADR plates, as long as the chassis number is the same on the ADR plate and chassis it will be OK.

BTW, there were no 76 L bugs, it should be a 73-75. Chassi number should be **5 if its a 75.

Appaently it was common for '76 Beetle compliance plates to be upside down. I have seen two. I have heard that it was a bit of a union protest at the Clayton factory as it was owned by Nissan at that time.

I read it on samba, so it must be correct.

Sometimes Volkswagen dealers sell spare parts. Amazing isn't it!

Ok cool ill have a look under the back seat. Theres a number in the spare wheel well on the left hand side behind the headlight area is that relevant. I've taken the compliance plate off to give it a cleaning as the numbers were hard to read should I put it back upside down or shouldn't matter?
