Dyno Run Video - Greg Ward's Hillclimb Car

After sometime we finally managed to tow Greg Ward's JPM inspired hillclimb car off to the dyno after a carby rebuild. Greg took some video footage and kindly asked me to post it for him. Here is one of the runs.

Unfortunately Greg will not be going to Wakefield. He is saving his coin at the moment, hence why he has not hit the track this year.

In relation to to me, I too will not be attending either. With work & family commitments at the moment things are little tight. I have not driven my car since King Eddie last year so I am more then hanging to get out there. Hopefully sometime soon.

Hi Dave, Greg's car is pretty much a full JPM 1916 combo. It uses his heads, cam, rockers, pistons etc. This same combo supports 200+ HP on JPM's own engine.

In relation to carbies, Greg runs the same 48IDF's he ran on his old engine. The only difference being he now uses 42mm chocks (which are not big enough). Greg also runs the same exhaust (Aircool.net special) as he ran on his old car too. Greg's reasoning for this is to get a back to back figure for comparison between the two engines and then work from there.

Re the dyno, and keeping in mind this is its first trip and there are some improvements to be made. The next step will be to go EFI, using the injection system as recommended by Johannes from JPM for this combo as the current carbies are simply not big enough. In saying that it is a fine line between max HP and driveability for the hillclimb circuits.

This time around the car produded 165.3RWHP (Dyno Dynamics - shoot out mode) @ 6800rpm. The most encouraging thing is it still produced 165 RWHP at 8700RPM (it was not taken past this). With increases in the intake air/fuel volume there should be some increased with that max RPM. The eng dyno bloke was slightly amazed at the figure and the fact it maintained HP very high in the rev range. Plus it was produced by a N/A U2L VW engine.

Need less to say Greg is very excited about the results considering the car left the dyno with a little under 40hp more then what it had when it went in. Changes in the timing and top end AFR saw these increases with the most significant change being seen in only 2 deg changes in the ignition timing.

I hope that answers your questions.

Hi Rudi, BP 98. Dynoed in 4th gear. 4th ratio I believe is 1.14 with a 4.375 ratio although I would have to check to confirm that. Your old 48's are now on Glen's hypo engine which gets changed between cars. That same eng which propelled his salt bug to 124mph over at the salt.
