Pre 1960 Fuel gauge
Hi all.
Is it possible to install a fuel gauge, in kit form, into a 1960 Beetle?

what do you mean by 'kit' form?
Pre 60s gauges were mainly mechanical with the 6V electric versions on being used by the early-mid 60s.
Dehne were the early mech gauges and VDO made the later elec gauges.
Vintage Speedshop in TW make a digital version of the Dehne gauge now. Pretty accurate reproduction of the faceplate and can be used with any VW
sender unit. It's a bit pricey for some pretty basic electronics but a nice looking gauge and means the dash needs no modifying as you can buy the
dash plate too
If you buy a 2nd hand VDO gauge then ya just need a 5W resistor to lower the voltage. A 1W would probably do cos the current is uber low. then ya just
need a tank that a sender can be fitted too.
I think post 65, when VW went external with the filler pipe, all have a sender hole in the tank. Earlier flat tanks will need a std Beetle sender
fitted and the late 50's early 60's hump type tanks can use a T2 sender but again will need modifying for the sender to fit. This requires welding
and only people who know what they're doing should attempt that.
