Clutch failed while driving?

Hey guys, I was driving my 62 bug earlier and I was coming onto a highway on ramp, I wasn't pushing the car hard at all, really babying it at the time. Anyway as I went to go from 2nd to 3rd it wouldnt go into gear. I pulled over and couldnt find ANY gears. I turned the motor off and all the gears worked. I had to start the car in first and drive home without using the clutch. I still managed to change gears but only when the revs were perfect. There is pressure when i press the clutch pedal in. Never had anything to do with fixing a clutch before. Any ideas as to what my problem could be? Cheers for any help!

could be anything, only way to find out is to take out the engine and look. or better yet have someone look at the arm while u press the pedal to get an idea whats wrong first.

once my car did the clutch, the pedal was getting lower and lower with each press til it was on the floor, maxed out the adjustment at the road side and still on the floor and also rock hard.

so i stopped the engine, put it in 3rd, cranked it and took off an drove all the way home in 3rd.

turned out my clutch fork bent like a banana and the snapped. this is what you get from reading the instructions on the clutch kits. had wrong specs for the fork adjustment

anyway open er up and take a peek. given that u say it feels like its there, but not working, might be the tube in the tunnel broke free?

Hi Blake,
The clutch cable is a multistrand wire cable. The most likely problem is that some of these strands have broken, and those that are still holding have stretched.
The cable needs to be replaced, which does not require the removal of the engine.
Cheers Dave

Ok I had a lookat the clutch cable and where the wing nut is on the motor end of the clutch cable, there is one wire that was frayed. I tightened the wing nut a few turns and the clutch was better then it was before it broke. Any thoughts on that?

then that suggests to me that it is freying / stretching

You might get a while out of it but it is going to let go at some time ......................... soon

I would get a cable and do it soon

I wouldn't think just one wire on the cable would make a difference, maybe it's worse back in the tunnel or up the front.

From my experience Donn, once one strand breaks, it has already started stretching to the end of it's life. They don't usually last long once one strand goes.
