VW Golf reaches 30 million

Volkswagen has just reached a production milestone of 30,000,000 VW Golfs, since it was introduced in Germany in 1974. It is currently on its 7th generation. 165,000 of them have been sold in Australia.

http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2013/06/14/volkswagen-builds-30-millionth-golf/

The Golf overtook the Beetle's 21.5 million total in 2002, and passed 25 million in 2006.

The Golf is behind the Toyota Corolla and Ford F-Series in total sales. But Golf totals do not include other VW models that are based on the Golf, such as the Jetta, Tiguan, New Beetle or various Audis, Skodas and SEATs. In addition, the current Golf still has the same layout and geometry of the original - unlike the Corolla, which was originally rear-drive with a longitudinal layout and is currently on its 11th redesign.

The rest of the world, yes. Lots of used Golfs in wrecking yards in Europe and the UK, and parts everywhere on Ebay. But not in Australia! VW Australia (LNC Industries) sold only 11,740 Golf 1s here from 1976 to 1981. Then TKM imported only a few hundred Golf 2s in the early 1990s. Inchcape only sold around 6,000 Golf 3s over five years in the mid 1990s. Even as recently as 2005, Golf sales were less than 5,000 a year here. The Golf's record year here was 2011, when 18,383 were sold - that's still short of the Beetle's Australian one-year sales record of 24,388 set in 1960. Last year there was a slight drop to 17,289 Golfs due to the Mk6 being run out for this year's Mk7 debut; who knows what will happen this year after the DSG recall problem.

Still, there's lots of them on the local roads nowadays, at least in the cities, and lots of them in the used cars for-sales, something we didn't have in the 1980s and 1990s.

Hi Phil
I don't think VW will have any BIGGER sales years in the years to come.. in Australia..

after the problem that wasn't fixed until it killed someone..

I just read today where Nissan are personally contacting about 9000 [?? from memory] owners of late PULSARS about the cars slowing down suddenly.... when the accelerator hasn't been touched for a while??..
a problem with the computer ....

COROLLA is just a name.. as you said they were RWD originally
so they are nothing remotely like the newer FWD models.

but with self park, self stop, engine turn off/ turn on/ etc
self sensing wipers/ self levelling lights , cameras and parking sensors front and rear etc..

and Now the New FORD SUV - the KUGA which will ring 000 when an air bag goes off...

I really don't think that is a good idea...
I wonder how the people who answer 000 are going to like it

Maybe there should be a sensor in the drivers seat to make sure some one human IS actually driving late model cars.. lol

:lol::lol:

Aren't you funny! The VW recall affects only 7-speed DSG models, and only those built between June 2008 and Sept 2011. Yes VW Australia was slow to act, but they are doing so now. Manual Golfs are not affected. Anyway this issue has been dealt with in other threads.

Meanwhile, how about you also make little jokes about some other recent Australian recalls, such as:

http://www.caradvice.com.au/236719/jeep-recalling-almost-35000-cars-in-austra...

http://www.caradvice.com.au/235835/maserati-recalls-almost-110m-worth-of-ital...

http://www.caradvice.com.au/233007/nissan-steering-wheel-recall-840000-cars-a...

Sorry to disappoint you Lee, but according to the most recent sales figures for 2013, VW's Australian sales are up 9.3% year-to-date (May) on 2012. Sales for the month of May are up 16.6% on May 2012. We'll see if this changes in future. The Golf 7 is not affected by the recall and recently won the World Car Of The Year award.

http://www.caradvice.com.au/234267/car-sales-may-2013-winners-and-losers/

And by the way, the Melbourne death thing involved a MANUAL Golf, not one with a DSG, and is not related to the recent DSG recall.

1965 Beetle loses power when foot taken off accelerator pedal. No computer malfunctions.

I park the Beetle myself, stop it myself, stop the engine by turning the key to the left and turn it on by turning the key to the right.

I sense when it's raining (by the water on the windscreen) and pull the wipers on.

Camera mounted to the front windscreen.

Front and rear parking sensors fitted (used to be known as bumper bars).

The airbag in the front passenger seat constantly goes off, but this cannot be remedied by dialling 000 or VW for that matter.

Really, there's nothing new about what's fitted in today's cars. Just that they're electronic, expensive and less reliable.
