Newbie problem.
Hi guys, I was driving my 72 square home on a chilly night about a week ago. sitting on 60 going down a straight I heard a clunking and it was getting
louder and louder. I just turned the engine off and got it towed..
Anyways, I was just looking for a proffessional opinion on what it might be.
I'm was thinking that maybe the tranny is out of synch? (not it doesn't go into reverse anymore when the engines on)
Anyways please help!
Cheers

Fly wheel come loose ? This happened to my son's car once (Lada Niva :yes )and also to an almost new Renault 12 of mine way
way back, from your brief description of what happened it sounds much the same.
I dream of a day when a chicken can cross a road without being asked for it's motive!

Hopefully that is the problem...
and good thing You turned the engine off..
they have 4 dowels to keep them in place plus a large very tight nut .. seems it wasn't done up to the torque its supposed to be.. the dowels are
cheap and easy to find...
but naturally the engine has to come out...
I'd also replace the engine crankshaft seal too...
while You are there...
cheers

Was the clunking noise from the the engine?
Was it related to road speed or engine revs?
There are allot of things that rotate, from a loose wheel all the way to the crank.......
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

Yeah the noise was coming vaguely in the direction of the engine...
And from the revving of the engine. The clunking was getting louder and the engine was loosing speed.

Your location would help with some advise and who could help you .
Check your CV bolts as if they have come loose anywhere they make a similar sound too

Flywheel loose is a big call, not common but can happen, and 98% of the time it can be terminal, damaging the crankshaft. Type 3 may be the cooling
fan, but loosing power is really anybodies guess.

Engine loosing speed (power?) sort of eliminates the flywheel.

I'm scared it's the transmission!
I've seen rebuilt ones going for about 800.. Would that be the best way? Pretty easy to take out the engine and swap transmissions, am I right?

You need to work through all the possible causes.
Check the fan belt and make sure ur oil pressure light goes off when it cranks.
If the engine starts and the noise is there still while the is not moving, it's the engine somewhere.
If it only happens when the car is in motion then it's gear box to the wheels...
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

I destroyed a ford 4L just to see an engine failure, yep thats what it sounds and behaved like, also burst into flames from the heat.
Also had one holden V6 throw a rod and blew both sides of the block and sump apart, but that still seem to run fine apart from the clackity noise and
bad vibration.

Loosing power and a clunking noise could be something as simple as a rocker nut backing off and bending a pushrod.
No need to throw ashes at yourself and wear sackcloth JUST yet mate.
Pull it out, then start having a poke around on a quiet weekend, these things are pretty simple, good experience.

Yeah mate,
took the engine and trans out with a mate a couple days ago, trans core is bust, so I'm just buying a rebuilt and reconditioned one.
Should be here within a week or two, fingers crossed!
Thanks again for all the help guys
