my new hillclimb circuit beetle

I thought its about time that i start a new thread on the circuit race section and show you guys and girls my new project as most of you know I wrote my 64 beetle off in what was a will beginners mistake and put it into a concrete barrier...anyways I found myself a 69 semi auto bug that was a roller and in old 2 PAC primer and also caked on sound deadener underbody stuff, ggrr "what a pain"...the body was pretty straight but has previously had a hit in the front left and also has a sunroof cut out.... So here is some pics...
The old ,banana beambughttp://i509.photobucket.com/albums/s334/cnfabo/IMG_20130607_202309.jpg

You can see the diagonal bar is benthttp://i509.photobucket.com/albums/s334/cnfabo/IMG_20130609_142217.jpg
Had to cut the reef off ton get the cage out

Because race car and I'm pretty much in sports sedan class I thought I'd cut some weight out..

Cut some more weight out of the doors and thinking about cuuting some more...http://i509.photobucket.com/albums/s334/cnfabo/IMG_20130708_143026.jpg
My first attempt at some patch work.this was my first time welding thin panel...not perfect but this is a race car not a show car...

And this is the start of my removable rear end...

I'm going to use my old deck lid a valance...

And some insperation/motivation,lol...just a few cars I'm lovin right now

Not all volksy but nice cars that's for sure...

Here some cage work..the 2 slip joints on the door bars took me half a day to get right... Damn I was frustrated....

http://i509.photobucket.com/albums/s334/cnfabo/IMG_20130728_121158_1.jpg
Thought I'd strengthen it a bit by doing some seem welding as I have taking a lot of stiffness out by removing the inner skins..
http://i509.photobucket.com/albums/s334/cnfabo/IMG_20130723_192757.jpg
And the fun part trying to fill these gaps, hhmm
http://i509.photobucket.com/albums/s334/cnfabo/IMG_20130720_132546.jpg.

So that's about it for now..so feel free for advise or any ideas...

Thanks for looking

Really good to see you with a project and plenty of motivation.:tu:

Now you can build an even better car than before using all the knowledge and experience you learnt.

good to see you're back on the bike so to speak.

You sure hit that barrier hard! Didn't look too bad at the time but major damage by the looks of it. look forwards to seeing it run.

oh, forgot to say I think your rear end detachable system is great. Is this your idea or have you seen a similar set up before?

I had really no choice Craig,I was running in it previously as my car was unrego'd and so this will be also.I had a chat to some cams guys and department of transport about getting it rally rego'd so I can at least drive it to selected events but I would have been doing it dodgy as it was not ever going to do rally events but can be rego'd like this...we do have improved production but never got put in this class and never thought to raise the question till now..doh...

Out of interest, where did you get your cage from initally? (for the old car) Was it a Bond kit or all custom?

Have done a bit more the last couple of weeks...

Cage is all done now, just have to make my rear fork bars which will be tied into the cage with rose joints...

Welded up the fuel filler flap

Welded in my old dash panel from my crashed bug
http://i509.photobucket.com/albums/s334/cnfabo/IMG_20130820_175613.jpg
I have removed the strip that holds the bonnet and deck lid rubbers
http://i509.photobucket.com/albums/s334/cnfabo/IMG_20130824_175710.jpg
I was going to use my old deck lid so I removed or the inner skins to take some weight out and found all this bog which is just a big hole covered up so I'm going to leave it for now as that shape to weld up is beyond me.I might look into getting a fiberglass deck lid..saves some work......

http://i509.photobucket.com/albums/s334/cnfabo/IMG_20130825_140441.jpg

That's it for now...I have a guy coming around before October to weld up the sunroof for me and show me some tricks or two.I'm thinking about making a stand for the body to make work a little bit easier to access and I can sit on a seat, lol instead of curled in a ball and seizing up....I could go on a bit more but back to the cave now...layers...

Looking good Chris:tu:

A tip for the future, the strip that holds the rubbers can be easily removed with pliers and just pulling it off (no need to drill holes and weld). You can then use a flapper disc to finish off the edge, removing any left over remains of the strip.

Some lower sections repaired.made my own lower A piller section..http://i509.photobucket.com/albums/s334/cnfabo/IMG_20130811_130111.jpghttp://i509.photobucket.com/albums/s334/cnfabo/IMG_20130811_144700.jpg

These are the pads that go behind the feet on the cage, instead of using nutserts for the bolts I just welded nuts on to save money from buying a nutserts tool etc...http://i509.photobucket.com/albums/s334/cnfabo/IMG_20130812_150016.jpghttp://i509.photobucket.com/albums/s334/cnfabo/IMG_20130924_141227.jpg
http://i509.photobucket.com/albums/s334/cnfabo/IMG_20130902_145640.jpg

This is where I'm thinking about mounting my dry sump tank.I'd cut a hole out and drop it inside the cab but you fill it up from up top.I'm still unsure as I want to do more events with passenger onboard,,hhhmmm.if not I'll put it next to me to help better balance the car from some fat belly man,lol....http://i509.photobucket.com/albums/s334/cnfabo/IMG_20130831_194822.jpg

Looking good.

BTW, there is a cheaper and more efficient alternative available on the oil coolers if you run dry sump. I used a cheapie intercooler and modified the ends to take an fittings.

It takes about 2lt of oil and as there is little to no pressure on the dry sump return line there is no risk of popping the cooler.

Previously I had two big setrab oil coolers, with the intercooler the oil temp dropped with about 15'c. We rarely see over 100'c on a hot 30'c day.

Worked a little on it last night. Should get the engine fired up this weekend on the stand and get one heat cycle on the heads to they can be re-torqued. Then I need to build the exhaust header and boost pipes. :)

End of Dec she must be running and tuned.
