Lakeside sprints Aug 17th

spent the day at Lakeside today running open sprints as I had to bail out of Leyburn due to family stuff tomorrow. Car ran hard all day with 7 outings. Having some over heating issues but at least the turbos are both working well and getting 20psi boost. 200k into the kink and lifting front wheels at the Carosuel and Hungry and plenty of wheel spin up the hill in third when the secondary kicks in so heaps of fun!

Need to play around with the handling next to get it to hold better in the turns and possibly a brak upgrade.

here are some pics and will load a vid sometime tomorrow after I get the go-pro back form my son.

topline adjustable struts + sway bar, camber the rear?

My bus can do way over 1000 mph in the driveway. Yay for random astrology facts.

running type 3 discs and calipers on the front and type 3 square drums on the back
Whiteline swaybars front and rear
front end was done by Boris at VVDS and has had the tower treatment and adjusters welding in
gas shocks front and rear
adjustable rear arms and short 28mm torsion bars

Planning on upgrading to Willawood front calipers on the front and running the type 3 calipers on the back with a suitable disc, also going to try and get a bit more camber on the fronts. Will aslo start playing with the front and rear sway bars to see how that effects the handling and also planning on building an adjustable front splitter.

I remember seeeing a really good thread on here about handling so will do some research and see if I can find it.

I know someone will say it so I'll get in first: the rear drums are not square.... they are from a Type 3 wagon.....

Good stuff

Get some ventilated discs on the front when you go to the wilwoods.

Notch needs them at the high speed tracks.... Sheer speed becomes too much for the vw brake capacity

Rizzo had never fried his with aircooled power plant but as soon as going to Subaru boiled the set up that he had previously run for years. The extra 100 HP just equates to much higher road speeds too often IMHO

Good on ya Louie, boost is so much fun, chuck some struts in it. Is the suspension set up the same that Boris ran in Targa?

Running hard for a longer really shows up cooling issues

yea I wondered where you got to? I only remember you having the one run and didn't get a chance to talk to you again.

Car was running hot so was only doing 2 warm up laps and then 2 hot laps and then 2 cool down laps so when you flew past me I was crusing around trying to keep out of the way. My best lap on the day was a 1:10:6 so still a way to go but that was 6 seconds faster than when I ran there last time with turbo issues.

still haven't got my gopro back......

No problemo Lou, yeah i thought you were just warming up .

i had to get out of there & get to a bike shop before they all closed, or i may not have got a new drive chain for the autocross,,, sorry man,,, we`ll catch up again soon i`m sure....Are you going to the Veedub Action day at Wynnum soon? Might see you there.

i have my steering rack out fixing it,,, my diff is also out getting fixed,,, i`ve just had my rear shocks fixed but now the front ones are leaking so they`re about to come off to be fixed,,, & i`m in the middle of stuffing with a few other fiddly bits on the thing as well while all the other stuff is happening :-) crickey!!!,,, i`ve never had to do much on this car it`s always just been pretty reliable- & now it`s all happening all at once :-)

no rest for the wicked hey??? :-)

thanks Matt, I am aiming to get down to the 1.05 so still some work to do. Couldn't push any harder on Saturday as I was running up to 120degrees after a couple of laps so some homework to do. Will be doing a complete coolant system check this weekend and checking the thermostat and also the water pump as the radiator was reading 78 degrees but the temp was 120 and there didn't seem to be much pressure building up so a bit of investigation is required.

Got my go pro back and need to convert files as they are 2-3 gig but you can see the speedo hitting 200kph down the main straight before the kink so once the overheating problems are fixed and some handling improvements I reckon 1.05 is easy.

MAtt, yep will be going to VW Action day. thinking of taking the beetle to display as it hasn't really been to a VW show up here yet and the KG is temporarily off the road.
