Postage/return/ebay moral dilema - what would you do?

Return postage is usually the buyer's problem. It sucks, but that's the way it is. Unless otherwise stated in the listing.

Is the seller in Australia, or overseas?
In most transactions, even outside of ebay, it is up to the customer to cover the return shipping costs.

From the Consumer affairs website:
When you return goods to a seller, you must pay postage or shipping costs.

The seller was very reasonable in giving you a full refund. The least you could do is return the goods.
Nobody wins in these situations. You just have to chalk it up too experience. It's only $7.00 dollars! Dave

Seller isn't in the wrong, and was decent to give you a refund.

Return postage is usually at the purchasers expense.................I'm sure a local shop wouldn't pay for your fuel if you drove there to return an item bought from them ;)

True, but when we contacted the seller and eventually convinced them to refund by threatening a paypal dispute, the issue of returning them at all was never raised. Seems decidedly wrong that a buyer should bear any responsibility for any costs in the instance that the seller has made the mistake. I'd gladly wear it if it was my error, change of mind etc, but as said, we wouldn't have bought them had they been correctly advertised so should we be liable for that?

It doesn't matter how, or why, or who. Once you have a refund, that item belongs to the seller again unless they say you may keep it. I have bought things in the past that have been wrongly advertised, and it's just easier and cheaper to keep it and let the seller know than it is to stage a protest and demand money or any other way of doing things you might want to do. I just bought a $5 sticker online and it was $5 postage from OS. It was the wrong colour to what they showed in their listing. The seller told me if I wanted to send it back for another colour or a refund then that was fine. None of the other colours they had would work for what I wanted so I would get a refund and then spend $5 with nothing to show for it. So screw it, I kept the wrong colour and ordered the right colour from another seller (first seller didn't actually have the one pictured) and now I have a spare sticker for my toolbox or something. Big deal. $10 won't break me.

99% of the time it's an honest mistake and you just have to wear it. Caveat emptor.

Take it as a lesson learned.

Next time buy from Vinnies to begin with. :D
Buying online has risks. I wouldn't bother disputing $11 over a online purchase.

Sorry to say, but I'm with everyone else.
The seller has also lost out and hopefully learned to list correctly.

Send them back knowing your doing the right thing and feel the good karma.

Advertised in the plus sized clothing category as a size 24. When they arrive they are in fact a size 24 but are a euro or US 24 which is probably nearer to a 4 or 6 in Aussie sizes. Hence utterly useless and didn't even fit my 11 year old daughter.

Complained to the seller, seller said she was not in the wrong, but we argued that we are in Australia and that Aus sizes are the norm and that as a regular clothes seller she should know the difference. She eventually gave in and refunded her $11.95, without the need for us to go to paypal. All good and nothing heard until last week when she demands to know why we have not returned the pants. AT OUR COST!

Now anyone with any sense knows that if we had gone through paypal we would have needed to pay to send them back, and logically to pay $7 postage to return a $5 item is not good economics. We have offered to send them back if she wants to pay but she seems to think it is up to us - after all my wife would not have bought them if they were a size 6 and it was an obvious seller mistake. We have also offered to just give them to vinnies but she is adamant she needs them back. I don't see its worth either of us paying to post them given the value.

So what would you do? I thought about sending them with no stamps and that way the receiver has to pay to collect them but there is more cost involved with that.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HI Phil
Well. I buy lots of stuff from china and mostly HONG KONG as china post is now very very slow.. from china not Hong Kong..
I do buy a lot of clothes in Australia.. on ebay..
I get the person selling to measure the waist, legs at the bottom , legs at the top , length of the legs etc.. so You know if they will be close to fitting... I did get one set of measurements which were great but would have fitted a 5 year old boy.. lol
I asked her to check the sizes again... well they were very odd again... but they were the shorts I wanted... So I bought them.. they were the nicest shorts I had ever seem,
they would have fitted a 6ft+ tall 132+ kg footballer lol
Fellow up the road thought they were really great.. lol

Any parts from the USA can be incorrect also... and it s just not profitable to send them back...

I wouldn't worry Phil. I just received a nice pair of mic and headphones with a usb plug instead of 2 x 3.5 mono plugs
also i ear peice lug is broken off.. its very difficult telling someone who doesnt understand the language.. it was packed with two lots of foam around it.... so wasn't broken during transit.. IT ONLY COST $8 SO .. SO i'LL FIX IT.. the plastic piece wasn't broken in the bag... lol otherwise I would have glued it back on..
anyway. I'll fix it and give it one of My grand kids to use..

Lee

one bad transaction from China/Hong kong out of hundreds..
Lee

Hi Again Phil..

to answer Your question...

Do Not send it back... most of these companies are sending out 100's or 1000's of items a day... As Most DO NOT SPEAK ENGLISH.... so, chances of getting the correct size after returning them is very poor.. IMHO...
they will have no idea why You sent them back....??

give them away...

when ordering shoes etc.. I always measure the actual part Your foot goes in.. as shoe sizes vary from country to country
plus from style of shoe [or clothes].. so many many things to go wrong..

I dont buy clothes shoes sandals etc from China because of this.... Its pure luck if You get the correct item..
AND THE ODDS ARE AGAINST YOU..

I did get a wrong rear window rubber from a US VW parts shop a few years ago... its no good sending it back...
it was just bad luck.. so I still have it... lol

cheers

LEE

cheers

lol over that little money? I wouldn't even bother. Hell, I just binned $50 worth of EFI electrical connectors I bought here coz they were shit and went and bought the same plugs plus more gear from the states coz I know they are good quality and genuine at less cost. I have lost heaps more on other stuff but its more that I changed my mind and found an easier way to do something or plans changed and I end up with excess bits and pieces, can sell them later anyway.

Sometimes its not worth the effort imho.

My Rule is -- if you buy anything from out of Australia --

then there is no warranty etc as too expensive to send back..

if its the incorrect part or doesn't fit .. its too expensive to send it back..

so, You are usually stuck with the odd item...

depends what you like to buy, but I get the opposite Lee. Generally I get peanuts for gold here. Had very little trouble buying OS and 80% of stuff I look for had been from OS, had far more trouble buying the 20% here to be honest, quality mainly.

But that once again is subjective to what you tend to buy. I typically go for quality and unattainable stuff in the Australian market which are easier to find OS

However when I want stuff made, I get it made here as I know people who do good jobs so money well spent.

Lesson here is, don't buy clothes online if you haven't compared the size to a supplied size chart. People get burnt buying clothes online only because they haven't checked the measurements. I always go off measurements only, not sizing and have never had a problem.

Without causing offence, could you actually make size 24 pants for that little cost? Alarm bells would have gone off there and made me a little curious to ask the seller questions first.
