Going for a breakdown hatrick.
Ok, so ive had two breakdowns in two drives...
19/9/13 - Generator Belt on Calder FWY
24/9/13 - Accelerator Cable in Yarraville.
Yee yee I know i should have those parts in the car at all times and no I wasnt wearing stockings that day Thank God for RACV
Roadside assistance
Crazy thing is, i was thinking to myself as I was putting the new belt in... I hope a cable doesnt snap before I buy some spares... took the car out
tonight and crunch... no pedal
Funnily enough im not even slightly annoyed, you dont drive a 53 year old car and expect nuisance free motoring.
Anyway, I'm going to buy a bunch of spares tomorrow that i can keep in the car at all times.
Can you guys recommend any other parts/bits n pieces that are MUST HAVES as part of your break down kit?
The most important bits to get you home when something goes Kaploink!!!

Well the V Belt and Throttle Cable you know about now.
Next on the "to go" list is probably the clutch cable.
For the carry list would be all of above plus points, condensor, rocker cover gaskets, Loctite/Permatex #3 and maybe a coil... plus the usual things
like oil, spare tyre, jack, basic tool kit, jumper cables etc.
All of that should be able to keep any Volksy running for a while I'd think !!!

Here's the list of spares I took when I did a 15,000 k round trip to WA in the Wench
!. Spare tyre for the trailer (just as well as I had a blow out when one tyre wore through the canvas, long storey )
I think that covers it, spose I should have taken a spare tyre for the wench but didn't have enough room.

RACV card and fully charged mobile phone?? Hah that's what I generally carry.
Am going to try and build up a few parts as finding with a 36er its a bit of a pain having to wait for someone to order parts in. Easier to have them
on hand but chances are whatever you have you don't need haha.

| Murpheys Law #123. When purchasing spare parts, every other part will break before you have to use a spare.

Must Have spares for an old car that parts cannot be sourced at Auto one etc..
FAN BELT* [not expensive] I carry two.
CONDENSOR *
POINTS *
ROTOR *
DISTRIBUTOR CAP *
CLUTCH CABLE [not expensive]
HEADLAMP BULB
TAPPET COVER GASKETS+
OIL CHANGE GASKET SETS+
*these should be replaced as they do wear out - and back in the 50s & 60s & 70s they were replaced during routine servicing..
+you will need these anyway..
ACCELERATOR CABLE [not expensive]
[also carry a joiner as the accelerator cable usually breaks about 2 inches from the end..] and fix a broken cable in two minutes..
[if it breaks near the end where it flexes]
I also carry a spare coil, 1 x long spark plug lead, that can be made to fit any bad lead, 1 x spark plug [new] but a good used one is OK..
I always carry 5 litres of engine oil.. and tools.. Fire Extinguisher..
and Jumper Leads..
*Once You have replaced all these items* including the spark plugs and Hi tension leads.. You can then carry the old ones for a spare until You
purchase new ones..
If running a 6 volt car I would include a coil and a voltage regulator
and bulbs.. as these are hard to find.. good used items are OK..
as new 6 volt items are expensive new..
I also recommend buying these parts from VW Parts shops NOT Your local Auto shop... You will save money...
cheers
LEE
PS: Fan belts don't usually just break, they wear out or stretch etc
Better to replace it if it looks worn... or flaps about when the engine is revved..

Told a small sorta fib, something I should have taken was a fuel filter, though that wouldn't have been needed if I had cleaned out the jerry can
before I filled it with juice and then dumped it in the tank.

Brilliant... thats perrrrfect. Bought some bits today (accel cables, clutch cables, belts and some other bits n pieces) will head out next week to top
up on the recommended supplies.
I'm obv. not a mechanic but im working it out as i go along (with the assitance of YouTube and the forum of course). Figured if i'm going to have an
old car again, it would be worth learning more about it so i can actually fix it when something goes pear shaped. So far so good although i am
learning things the hard way haha.

Hi
Sometimes the hock on the clutch pedal can snap, so a spare pedal is a good idea, I've had this happen.
The problems you've had is nothing compared to the deperiaction and interest charges for newer car.

Get a spare wing nut for the clutch cable and carby clamp bolt.
I read it on samba, so it must be correct.
Sometimes Volkswagen dealers sell spare parts. Amazing isn't it!
