Window Wiper Motor
is there any way of increasing the speed of a standard sbug window wiper assy or possibly swapping out for a better available unit

I thought Hi speed was OK.. but then again it doesn't rain too heavy in the country.. lol
I'm sure there was someone who had a single wiper like that used on Mercedes benzs years ago..
the big blade used to go from one side to the other.. not the normal uncomplicated wiper system, but I think it was on a 1303 beetle with the big
curved windscreen...
off hand I don't know of anyone who has substituted the VW wiper motor for something else..
I know that a 6 volt wiper motor goes much faster even when used with a resistor to drop the voltage down.. but their motor shaft is smaller [Ithink]?? I know the shafts of the wiper spindles are smaller and they aren't threaded like the 1971> beetles like the 1302s.. but nothing is
impossible.. just a darn sight harder.. lol.. so the piece that attaches to the wiper motor that moves the wiper spindles could be modified to
fit..
You could use two resistors to have two speeds. I've done that on 6 volt beetles.. converted to 12 volts..

That was me back in my boy racer days.
It wasnt anything complicated just the stock setup with the left spindle removed and the cam reclocked so the wiper parked in the straight up position
like a V8 Supercar
If you have a 72 or later with the stalk style wiper switch you can retro fit the wiper motor from a 90s Golf, New Beetle, Polo, Passat etc but on the
flat screen bug they interfere with the radio.
The stock system is actually surprisingly fast when everything is working right, it just usually isnt after 40 years.
worn linkages, dry spindles, low voltage and the grease in the motor gearbox turns to tar after 4 decades and worn brushes+commutator in the motor all
work well at slowing stock wipers right down.
If you sort any problems with those you would be surprised how quick the stock ones work.
I also run my ignition switch through a relay, you would amazed how much faster they go when they get full battery voltage too.

Fit a 6 Volt unit into a 12 volt system... that'll hype it up for ya

Hi
I agree with Joel, do all the things he suggested. I grease my shafts with Never Seize and the wipers in my 1303 and my sons 1303 perform really
well.
Are you getting a perceivable 2nd speed? If anyone has run the 2nd speed on nearly dry glass the spring that holds down the 2nd speed brush will over
heat and loose tension resulting in 1 speed wipers.
It makes me cringe when I see people with their wipers going flat out on a nearly dry screen, I'm always getting into trouble from my wife for having
the wipers on low speed or intermittent when she feels I should have the wipers slapping away at high speed.

Yes Joel, VW used to advertise that they always changed things on beetles because they were an improvement on the old part.
Odd, that after all those years they didn't change the wiper blades... better blades with a stronger spring.. like the 1968 wiper blades.. which
will fit early wiper spindles.. they have a grub screw to attach them to the spindle...
I think the German made 66 or 67 also had them.. [with the larger glass]
and everything that moves should be lubricated... and it stops wear too..

Try running a pair of 5mm wires direct to the battery to see if there is any difference in speed.. wiper gearbox may need refilling with lithium
based moly grease.. plus grease on all moving parts... also try fitting a new earth wire using a new stainless steel self taper screw.. if You are
using an old hole use a larger size screw... The wiper switch contacts would be dirty and burnt... which drops the voltage..
also check Your wiper fuse to see if it gets hot with the wipers on... that means a high resistance in the fuse and the holders..
best to run the wipers thru a relay.. for the maximum speed..

I compared vw 12v 2 speed motor and setup to one out of a falcadoore. very much the same. The motor looks 95% identical. its also a 2 speed that one I
had and its hauls ass on 2nd speed with wipers way bigger than vw ones.
makes me wonder why I haven't seen any adaption of newer wiper motors and electronics?

I had an auto sparky strip, clean, lubricate and re assemble my wiper motor and I fitted new spindles. Wipers have never gone so well since I got the
Beetle (30 years ago). So a little TLC for the wiper motor will probably make a big difference

I put magna wiper motor in my beetle and kombi. a bit of chop and weld on the spinnything arm to get the near enough stroke
