Swing axle Internals...??

Hey guys,

I scored a type 3 swing axle to do a conversion on my bus. One of the rubber boots was missing and some of the oil laying around looked a bit watery. So I popped the side plate off yesterday and found this corrosion and small crack.

I believe the box hasn't been in a vehicle for some time but was apparently going fine up until then.

Wondering if anyone has some advise weather or not to put it in and see how it goes, or should I be looking at replacing some bits first.

Hope someone can help.

Thanks heaps.

Just give it a go

Might find other issues with shifting etc anyhow.... At least then if you go the fixing route, you can tend to any other issues in the one go

mmm 3 people, 3 opinions. IMO if you run that it will DIE very quickly, if it isn't already. Not the crack in the side gear, not sure that it would be a problem, but all that corosion will make short work of wrecking anything that is good, it's like filling your gearbox oil with sand paper!!!

It would be a shame to ruin a good gearbox [if it is a good gearbox?] for the sake of swapping diffs.

Craig has made a generous offer, why not do it properly?

Thanks gents.

I was considering putting it in for a full rebuild at some stage anyway. Is it safe to say if I do a rebuild it comes back as good as new.?

Any suggestions of someone in or near Brisbane that could do it and approx. cost.?

Thanks again.

Thanks Matt.

Craig, Greg.. I have never had anything to do with swing axle so have no idea. Swapping diffs, doing it properly ?

Is the dif something that can be just swapped over.?

Thanks.

Dangerous is the man...he just did my swing-axle box for No.8 Beetle.

And he's a lot closer to you.

Yeah that corrosion is ugly, as is the cracked washer.
The rust shows where the high tide mark is.
Both should be addressed before use.

Unfortunately I am booked out till mid March next year.

the crown teeth will just shatter under load I reckon.

that box is stuffed. I would jut toss it. there might be some good bits in it but I doubt it, prolonged moisture will damage harden steel alloys found in a box.
