What web space do people use and how much of it ???
I may shortly be able to offer very cheap or free webspace to people who wish to have their own patch of the WWW without having to deal with all those
crappy adds, banners and all that crap. Firstly I need to see what demand is like so if anyone is interested if they could please post below so I can
guage interest.
The space would be full supportive of 90% of web software and has full pop 3 access and FTP etc etc,

Mustang Sally and I get 5 meg with Kooee, out internet provider. She's under the impression this is not a lot. I wouldn't know as I have
never posted a web page. Not sure if I could be bothered as everything in our lives changes so fast it would be a pain having to update it all the
time.
Perhaps if I had a buisness or was travelling I'd use more web space. I was thinking of having a resume page somewhere but then worry about
privacy and nutjobs who make life difficult by know everything about you.

No ASP I am afraid, I will check into it some more though and see what I can sort out.
5MB is plenty for your average page. It is just when you start putting pictures and stuff all over it that the space starts to add up. |

I use yahoo for all my photos of the resto - currently using about 10 meg. I'm quite happy to leave that there, but I am thinking of some space
for the Vee Dub Designs website... Don't know how much space I would need though.

I've got a domain name registered and waiting for me to get a site up. The free space I get from Optus is not enough for what I want to do.
It is going to be more a hobby travel site than a money making one so I'll be looking for something, just need to get my act together. |

Webspace
At the moment I am looking at offering webspace for $1 per MB per Year . Each user would get a free sub domain or a full domain if they already had
their own or wished to register one to my name servers. This is 99.9% uptime space with full back up and a heap of support to most things. |

I currently use about 200 MB. And you're right, it's mostly images. Only about 30 MB of it is actual documents, slide shows etc.
Thanks for the offer anyway. I'm sure some of the guys here will be in on it. :-)

Can you please explain a little more about the domain name registration (just gone blonde for a second...).
I DON'T have my own domain name registered, but I would like to... just haven't got around to it yet.

It's really easy. You pay about $20-$40 per year (depending on which NIC you get it through). I use pairNIC, who are associated with Pair
Networks. They are a nice bunch, and don't charge too much, but you should be able to get cheaper. However, I trust pair.

If you want to get a domain name, that's easy. The trick is to get a stable hosting place that will be here in two or three years. You can't
be chaning IP address every week with a domain name, so you want somewhere that will keep it roughly the same or at least help you out if they change.
greebo.net has had the same IP address since 1997, for example.
There are many choices for domain names, but you should choose:
.com.au if you're a commercial entity in Australia
.org.au if you can be bothered and wish to wait a long time
.net if you're an ISP or similar or offer network services
.org if you're doing your own not-for-profit place
Or just be like everyone else, and go for .com, like aussieveedubbers.com. There is heaps of NIC competition, prices are low, and you don't have
the overhead of a long URL.
Tips:
* Never pay for more than three years. The SRS system doesn't accept registrations longer than this, and so you gain nothing for it, and if your
vendor goes bust, you could lose the domain name. I was on the auDA DNS competition panel, and I know what I'm speaking about on this one. At my
and a few other's suggestions, we put in strong consumer safeguards to prevent .au fraud. This will not help you outside the .au space.
* Choose a NIC that wont stick up their web-redirection page if you choose to park the domain instead of getting a web page up pronto. NICs that use
you as free advertising are scum.
* Don't pay over $50/year for registrations. Dodgy operators can get you a domain for as little as $5/year, and the cost to the operators is
miniscule compared to the fees paid. $120 or more per year is total money for jam and is far too expensive. Pair are offering a 4 year rego for the
same price as 3, which works out at $25ish per year.
