Sound Deadener
Hi all, just wondering what is the best cost effective material to use to quieten down Bertha. We did the trip to Adelaide and back comfortably but
the only thing was she gets a bit noisy inside. Looked at Dynamat but gets expensive. Keen to get this done before Valla!

Hi
Well I used that Yoga Gym mats sold in many shops..
were about $10 each or cheaper blue or yellow colored.. a foam material that is water proof and has worked well in My beetle.
I just used contact cement in tubes... I covered the roof with two layers and inside the doors and side panels and under the rear window and around
the back and bottom of the dicky seat...
This has worked great, and I have also since put it above the gearbox and around the engine and engine bay which I painted flat black..
it weighs nothing...
Some one on here found some material that is used to sound proof garage doors.. it was two sheets of silver paper with bubble wrap in between..
I haven't seen that at Bunnings as yet... so dont know how expensive or how much You have to use..

That will help muffle it slightly but it doesnt have enough weight to cut down on the noise.
I've got some sound deadner in mine that is just dynamat with a different label and much smaller price tag works just well but you're not paying for
the name.
I think I've still got the box, I'll try and find the brand for you.

My Son done His Kombi with dynamat and a lot of it came off..
vehicle is still being restored..
I find its just too heavy... especially for a Kombi... adds a lot of weight..

First time I've ever heard of Dynamat coming off Lee. Please tell us more about that.
We've had to remove some Dynamat from vehicles occasionally to fit cards or to clear a patch to anchor RnR beds and it will come off eventually but
by no means easily.
As far as adding weight goes, full coverage in a Kombi adds about 40- 45kg. Same as having a big dog or small person in the bus. Doubt you'd be able
to calculate a difference in performance or fuel consumption.

Dynamat isn't a sound barrier. It just stops resonance. It won't stop noise coming through, it'll just stop drumming from the panels. Just be
aware.

Oh no wait - That is just for body work.
Never mind.
I cannot vouch for it but I bought a roll of 4kg Wave Bar.

Costs $30/m2 so a lot cheaper and works well for the same type of noise in different application. $300 got me a 10m long roll which will do the roof
and floor and sides with an extra layer for some of the engine area.

I recently bought this stuff called stinger road kill.
Same as dynamate, actually better according to the guy I bought it with as he said dynamat has cheaped out on material thickness and quality in the
last year or so, so he recommended it over dynamat. I bought it from a car audio place 50m from work.
in the end I didn't care, I was using to replace factory fuel tank strap padding which is the same stuff. Worked well for what I wanted.
Each sheet was like 30 bucks, 1m2 I think?

there is cheap stuff on ebay that I got and am currently lining my 68 with. But it is heavy.
there are lots of different brands on Ebay. I have some Road kill in my '59.....but I only covered the rear area over the box. I didnt have funds to
do more at the time and the weight was too much. didnt really do much in such small quantities

Correct, I have used Raamat , tests I saw showed it was the same as Dynamat but the adhesive they used was longer lasting and stronger than Dynamat
and the roll I bought worked out cheaper, I didnt want it falling off the roof onto my headliner

yep you can buy both kinds in the states from ww. they are pre cut for a specific purpose but they are big sections so you could re-purpose them.

I don't know if this site has been posted before but it is a guy how is testing the performance of a whole lot of CLD type sound deadeners (Dynamat,
etc). Unfortunately at the moment the results are spread across a lot of pages because he is adding them as the tests are done. I have linked to the
page with Peel N seal on it as similar roofing materials are often touted in this and other forums as cheap replacements for Dynamat, etc. The test
shows that Peel N seal has very little effect compared with most actual sound deadeners. One of the best he has tested is also on the same page.

Clarks Rubber have a large range of product.
I chose a dual layer material and some panel deadening strips for areas that may vibrate.
$200 covered my engine bay and cargo area of my squareback. I glued it in with Kwikgrip.
Tuned Type IV power - shaking out the rust.

I'm not sure there is a ''cost effective'' way to do it. having just finished what I would deem the minimum on my van, I think I am about half
way to a complete job. so far I would have spent about $300.
Trufit carpets in Victoria sell a closed cell foam and MLV layer (foam-vinyl-foam) combo that I am Thrilled with. It comes in a 900x1400 sheet as I
recall and goes for about $100 and let me tell you it is heavy! (second one in the pile)

I used some deadening paint on the inside of the floor pan, then I used some old carpet underlay (felt) about 1.5cm thick, glued down with contact
cement. That was the cheap part. The paint stuff is like rubber tar, probably get it from a hardware or auto spare shop. The underlay was from when
my neighbours redid their carpets (free).
I picked up some dynamat on an auction website (fluke) but I know this stuff is expensive. it was enough to cover most of the door skins, the back
seat (fire wall and gear box area). Little bits under the bonnet and strips across the roof and under the foot wells and kick panel areas, then
covered those areas with the contact cement and carpet underlay treatment.
I ordered carpet off the roll from Knox and cut and trimmed to fit. It was a fair bit of work, but it was worth it. Its quiet as. Doors shut "like a
golf". If you can get some dynamat type stuff it's worth it to stop the hum /drumming noise.
