steering box

Hi guys
would like some help to make sure the steering box is centralaized .The same number of turns each way .My 71 super seems to turn further to the right than the left .so on sharp
right turns the tyre just touchs the sway bar but not on sharp left turns .

I centralised mine by counting the whole number of turns i could get from full lock right to full lock left. Then... divide by half. Turn the steering wheel that many times, now align the front wheels to be straight at that position.

Not sure on 71, but on my 69 bug, there was a bolt stopper that could be screwed in and out to limit how much the pitman arm could turn around (and thus limit the steering in a sense). You might have this, check and see if it might be limiting left turn motion.

Hi

I presume Supers would have some sort of travel stop like Chris was saying that We have on 1500 Beetles..
If So, then one of Yours needs adjusting...

if Your front tyres are wearing OK.. then Your wheel adjustment & camber and caster maybe OK..
otherwise a wheel alignment is needed...

Hi

There is a threaded hole on the pitman arm, screw an M8 taper tap into it, there is a pad on the steering box base which looks like centre punch mark, turn the steering to where it needs to be so that you can screw the M8 tap in until it touches the centre punch mark.

That should be the straight ahead position, get the car aligned so that the wheels are straight ahead in this position.
