auto to manual conversion,shift rod question????? NOW SOLVED
H guys
I have just welded in the cutch cable tube and decided to put my manual shifter rod in the tunnel just to see if everything was OK and its 3" or so
to long..do I use the I auto one or have to shorten the manual one..
If I have to shorten the manual rod do I cut it the same length as the auto one???I have realised the shifter location is moved back....

Semi auto shift rods are different length to manual but there are also a couple of different length manual shift rods.
What year bug are we talking?
Around 73 the gearstick moved further back so the rods are shorter.

Before you cut the rod, measure the angle between the ends...from memory something around 17 degrees...

My manual one came out of my 64 beetle and the pan I'm converting is a 68/69 unless it got changed under the 68/69 shell once upon a time......

I should have a shift rod from an S bug if that may help. if you want to check lengths let me know by pm.

Use the shorter rod, cut the end off. Weld in a nut in the cut end of teh shift rod (like an M12 etc.)
Then, use a fully threaded m12 bolt, say 100mm long, weld the end of the cut shifter rod (or piece of tube) on the bolt head for the shift coupler.
Use another m12 nut as a lock nut, now you have a fully adjustable shift rod
(ô_!_/ô) (ô_!_/ô)
69' baja: kombi box, thing spindles, irs, disc front, type 3 rear drums, 2 inch lift kit, 31x10 rears.
New engine in process: 94mm p&bs, 74mm C/w chomol Crank, 35.5x39 SP heads, turbo. Wierd combo, hopeful torque monsta! |

Or this is another option but I'd use weld in threaded bungs...but surely there is another rod to use....???

I think mine was an m12 coupler from a hardware store... its for coupling cyclone rods (also called hooker rods). its like a 25mm long 12mm nut.
massaged it in with a hammer.

Gotcha,coupler hex,cheaper the weld on bungs...and I thought it was called booker rods,not hooker " must be on your mind,lol....." He he...
I can do this no worries....
But while we are on the subject and for further info for users,there must be a manual shift rod that bolts straight in.....
Anyone?????

Well theres yer problem.
The 60s 6volt ones are a bit longer as the gearstick was further forward with a dogleg bend in it because of the heater control.
the 68-72 manual with the straight gearstick were the same length as what you need.

Thanks Joel,so I'm assuming they are not the same length as the auto one.or they are as the gearstick is in the same place??if so couldn't I use my
auto one...

I got a shift rod out of a same model beetle or thereabouts.its about 10mm longer then the auto one and has a slightly different bend....
