1776 or 1956


A few questions for the engine builders out there.I have most parts to build a 1776 including 90.5 pistons. I am now considering adding a 76mm stroker crank but have a few questions. Firstly, can I use a stroker crank with A type pistons?
Second, I have a single Weber 40DCN and stock size valve heads that have been mildly ported. Would these be ok with a 1956 or am I wasting my money stroking it and using those parts still?

I'm unsure of the A pistons but IMO going big with the case is never a waste of money cos altho the single carb and smaller valves will strangle the engine a bit, these are external parts that can be easily upgraded down the line whereas if you don't do the machining etc to the case then any further mods to engine size will cost more in the long run.

Wayne, usually there's no substitute for size, you can use A pistons with 76mm crank and stock rods but due to the cylinder spacers you will have a wide engine that carries with it it's own set of problems eg. Space restriction in the engine bay, exhaust choice, intake runner modification, cooling shroud modification, etc.
All in all if both engines are built the same, they will perform almost the same.

Wayne , the A pistons can be used with the 76 mm crank , however the engine will end up around 5-6 mm wider than stock . When I use the 76 mm cranks I use the B pistons and a longer conrod to get the engine width to the std specs. along with the chevy journals so clearancing the case is at a minimum . I think that the single carb and stock sized valves would be quite a restriction if you are building for power , however it will produce a lot of torque if this is where you are heading . I would stay with the stock stroke as you will end up with a much nicer all round good engine with the 1776 cc size , ROD.

Thanks guys. I will save the money from not buying the stroker crank and con rods and put it towards the paint job
