MY68VW

It's about time I started a thread about my squareback.

In 2002 I bought my second volkswagen, my first was a baja I had in my late teens.
This square was a rusted out '74 costing me $350. Soon after an acquaintance told me about his friend wanting to empty out his shed and asked if I wanted another square for parts.
Unseen, I hired a trailer and equipped myself with a case of beer (it was all he wanted for the trade).
Turned out to be an earlier model with tired paint. With a new battery and some fuel down the carby it fired first go, the only problem was it only worked in 2nd gear.

Come January 2003 I lost my job. I ditched the '74 after savaging as many parts as I could and spent the next 9 months stripping down and putting back together the '68.

By August 2003 I had it registered.

It became my daily drive and I soon started adding parts a fiddling with the set up.
This was the lowest I had it but it would scrub so I raised it a notch.

I found it was great to camp in and could go almost anywhere.

In 2009 I decided to spend some money and had Wayne Penrose build me a mild, ECU, EFI, type 4 engine.
I moved with my girlfriend and daughter to Thredbo that year.

Much fun was had driving through the Alpine roads.

My girlfriend and I decided to part ways and since she had chosen the colour and change was in order.
And $85 worth of pressure packs later...

The new power plant proved too much for the standard box and it ate 3 of them.

My headspace went a bit wayward at this time (as it does when a relationship ends) but I didn't stop making changes to my car no matter how questionable.

At one point I forgot to add gear oil and attempted to drive 500km with a dry box - it lasted 300km.

As can be seen I had started a back to metal paint job.

I was sick of replacing gearboxes so went back to WPVW to get a superdiff built.
My funds weren't great (due to custody proceedings) and the car sat in Waynes yard for 3 years.

My daughter regularly begged me to to visit "little car" after school. And has told me when I get it back I have to finish it properly before driving it.

This week I brought MY68VW home!!!

That afternoon I started stripping off the paint/rust.

2days later and I've found a few nasty rust spots but I haven't removed all the panels or paint. I'm going to get plenty of practice with welding in new metal.

Nice story and good pictures, I enjoyed reading it.
Good luck with the rebuild, I'll look forward to seeing updates.
Rob.
