rhyso's fat square
thought i might aswel copy across my build thread and add on what i have been up to lately but to give you an idea what i started with...
1972 automatic dual carb that apart from atlas whitewalls was fairly stock and very ugly.
had a messy poo brown interior with highbacks and a lot missing or destroyed, had been off the road and uregistered for atleast 4 years, didnt want to
run and had about as much clearance as a four wheel drive.
with about a months work replacing roadworthy parts i took it to a friend of ours to finish and roadworthy to get it registered. i managed to get it
on the road without a whole heap of work but it didnt want to idle and it was running rough but i wanted it registered and through vic roads before
the fun began.
day it was registered.
since then a lot has changed but i decided to go down the path of creating a sort of rat looking square that is also my daily driver and driven over a
100kms a day.
interior i bought all black door cards, swapped out brown higbacks for a red and black low back and a red rear seat, i have a brown steel hing cover
with a light connected to my door switches, early steering wheel, vdo oil temperature and pressure gauges and a full sound system with tweeters in the
factory speaker loaction, headunit and 6inch speakers under the seats and a subwoofer in a beer keg in the rear and an ammo case to hide my amp.
(recently converted to amp under seat and a wooden sub box)
as for the motor we replaced the stock carbs with empi's after giving the inlet manifolds a match grind and polish, went to a 009 distributer,
replaced leads and coil, voltage regulator, did rear main seal, rocker cover seal, fixed a leak in the oil cooler and auto, fitted an exhaust from
cip1 and blocked off all air ways (stock location for carby intake and the heater channels) and it seems to be running beautiful and staying between
70-95degrees once its warm since i have no chokes.
i bought a sun visor, venetians for the rear sides and rear window and bought an old roof rack off a kombi and made it fit my square.
then i was unhappy with the roof rack and the height so i removed the rack and wound down the tortions
and then like usual i start drinking and parts arrive
so went lower and more travel with bert3 drop spindles, had to convert to early discs, calipers and tie rod ends but it was worth it
the rack makes a comeback as i further modified it to suit the roll and taper of the type3 roof while only just sitting off it
quick pic loaded up for a 600k round trip to lochsport

since then i have done a bit more work, i got my rear wheels widened to 6inches and wrapped them in 195r65's and put a fresh set of atlas whitewalls
on and repainted my wheels black and ditched the hub caps, cut rust out from the fresh air cowel under the dash and treated it all, my pans were
getting a bit of surface rust in them so while it was all apart i stripped the car from front to back and treated the floors and covered it all in
sound deadener from front to back and removed all my carpets and now only run some square weave type mats i got from ikea for a rat kind of look.
i also retro fiited some pop out windows, cut the pillars out of a very rusty parts car and stole the tounges that the glass pivots on and cut holes
in my pillars and nutserted them in, nutserted the latches to my other pillars and got some pinch weld from clark rubber to seal the windows.
i think iv also re done my roof rack for about the fourth time just getting it to sit nicely and re-stained the slats.
just recently i fitted air shocks front and rear run from a compressor and tank which ended up resulting in a beam swap because the lower arms in the
beam that was in my car were seized but it now sits 3 notches down in the front with drop spindles and no bumpstops and the rear is 2 down with no
bumpstops with air shocks all round.
il let the pictures do the talking
and as she sits now
