Hey mate, havn't been on here in a while to catch up with what you're doing.

Looking great, and from the pic above, it looks like the heater channel is missing?! :smirk:

Yes, thats true. I have cut the heaters out and am trimming the new ones carefully as i go.

I left a bit of the passenger one in, still to be neatened up a bit so that it'll all blend in...

Excuse those old terrible welds there...

Here we are, the finished product of the fan shroud. Its not for a $100k show car, so it doesn't bother me.
Now coming along fast, the current progress of the engine.

We made a gusset to join the heater just before the B pillar. The front is just all tacked in for the moment.

And the passenger heater to date.
Quite a bit of lining up to do, the second picture shows how poor quality these are

Been a while since an update, so here we go!
Got the heater on the passenger side all tacked in, and we're just slowing trimming the firewall / bulkhead when we get time.

But had another issue. I went to pull the distributor out to put it into another bug as i was having ignition issues with it, and the drive came with it

So this view is down the hole :(

I was told that there was supposed to be 2 shims / washers on the bottom of the drive, and they didn't come out when i pulled the drive out, so i put a fine screw driver down the hole and poked around, and i was sure there was only one there, so i got in there with a fine magnet and pulled it out. And there was only 1.

I thought for the worst and pulled out the sump plug, drained all the oil with the engine sitting on two old coke- crates and then pulled the sump plate off. Still no sign i shook it, flushed more oil though, and nothing.

So i took a photo of the shim between the calipers, and send it to a good friend of mine, a VW mechanic.
Thankfully, he replied that it was an early thicker type, and only the 1 shim was required
Got the shim lowered down with some forceps, and then thanks to karmann141 and vwo60 on here, i used the distributor drive puller tool to put the drive easily back in the right place.
So in went the spring, then the distributor itself, and clamped it all down!
Turned over the engine, and all was perfect!

Well at least i know the drive is in correctly now!

Next me and my brother got it off the crates and onto the chassis.

I slowly and carfully bent the pre-heaters into their correct shape (empi quality once again shining out), and onto the car.

On with the extractors and the muffler and clamped up everything nicely.

We wiried up the coil and the starter motor ready for a test run.
Its half running, but spitting backfires everywhere and causing aero start cans to catch on fire, so we might just re-think that before we give it another go :)
