kombi box in beetle


ive got a vw sand buggy with a beetle irs rear end with all standard parts such as trailing arms etc and I just have put a kombi 1600 irs gearbox in it.. my question is can I still u the beetle axles and put kombi cv's on the gearbox end and still use beetle cv's on the other end. will this work? will the axles work without hitting stub axles in full up and down travel? any help will be awesome thanks.

I have seen it done the opposite way with a beetle box in a kombi so I would say it works in a bug too.

Hey mate.

I was running an 1800 bus box in my bug.

Before I fitted Thing stub axles and lifted it I was just running bug axles with Kombi CVs on the inner and bug ones on the outer.

Didn't have any issues with them binding. I ended up drilling the hole in the end of the axle a little deeper and tapping for an M8 thread. Then using a large flat washer and button head allen bolt to hold the inner star of the CV on.

My box was mounted about 15mm back from the stock bug box location. You should be able to run the bus CVs no worries but your best bet would be to assemble the CVs and axles dry with no boots and then remove your rear torsion bars and fit the axles. Then you can jack the arms up and down and cycle your suspension. You can then check the freeplay in the axle at full bump and droop aswell as when it is level between the box and trailing arm.

With the kombi box in a beetle, the cv's can be set up as you describe but technically the beetle axles are too long as the bus box is wider at the diff. Shorter axles are LH Auto type 3 are perfect when paired together for this application but are getting harder to find. You may not notice any problem at first, the issue of too long axles will only become evident when suspension is compressed to the point where both cv's on the one axle are at the same height (suspension very compresses like hitting a big bump). The axles can punch out the seals.
Smiley may have had no issues due to his box being further back in the chassis.
Depending on how you machine the cv/axle combo to fit the bus cv to the beetle axle, you can improve the too long situation.

I use beetle axles machined down to 397mm in length.
