idle rises and falls

Stock 1600 tp solex carburator. When shes cold and I take off down the road it cuts out when I stop, this lasts for quite a while, when it warms up its okay but the idle rises and falls. At idle I sprayed carby cleaner around the shaft of the carby etc. but doesnt seem to have any air leaks. Mixture, idle screw perhaps? Im going to strip the carby and put a kit through it on the weekend. Is a cleaned kitted Solex better than a new Empi pict carby?
Thanks

Spray around the all the manifold joins as well mate, I agree with Barls sounds like a air leak. Done all the usual timing/points checks as well?

It will all be OK in the end, if it's not OK it's not the end!
