Notch fuel filter


A couple of weeks ago we were on the way home from the Copper Coast Classic Cruise when after passing a campervan the Notch suddenly lost power. Down to a point that uphill was down to 20km/h and flatout downhill was 80km/h.
after a couple of engine bay searchs to solve the problem we finally nursed it home.
Next day I checked the fuel filter and found it pretty full of crap. After changing the filter the problem still remained.
I'd be interested to know if this is the origial filter or if they are still available...

After pulling off the air filter and having a search around lo and behold the link rod between the throttle relay and the throttle shaft lever was hanging free on the left Carb.
150km home with two cylinders idling!
Guess that's just one more blip learning curve.

I may be wrong, but I don't think there was a 'original' filter for any of these old volkswagens, where is your filter located?

I personally have a small inline filter (a little larger than yours) directly after the fuel tank (about 3-4 inches of hose between the tank the filter). Pick the filters up for $4 at supercheap auto, so they are cheap enough to swap with an oil change.

Good to hear that you did find the issue, hope the filter advice can be of some assistance tho.

Filter was up in the gap alongside the auto trans, tons of space to get at it. Used a standard service station bought one. No biggie, mainly was wondering if this German made Meyle one was a standard issue or a replacement part. Seems to be a really good quality filter.

Vw used a brass, for early cars, and plastic, for later cars, gauze sleeve inside the tank over the outlet pipe.
Those cheap inline filters are great so long as not fitted in the engine bay.

I'm going to have to have a sticky to see if I have a filter up there too incase that was maybe a factory location. Need to get myself a better trolley jack tho.

there is an Original filter in the tank these should be cleaned or replaced when damaged

the plastic one shown is after market and available from most auto shops

Looked up the Meyle brand on ebay, stacks of items, mainly filters to suit german made vehicles.
Sits in a well protected spot d3wy and away from the engine bay. I'll grab a photo ext time its up on ramps. Bugger all room under a Notch even when its not lowered.

Both Haynes and Gregorys guides mention that there is a filter in the tank outlet pipe, but no mention in the index of either. I'd never have known if you hadn't pointed it out.
Thanks psimitar and vw54, I'll have a look at the one in the tank when I get a chance.
