Questions about overiders and Type 3 bumpers.

Greetings Dubbers!

So ive got the stock standard original bumpers on my 70's Squareback but i love the look of overiders and would LOVE to get a set on the type 3. I was having a bit of a browse and doing some research on them however most bumpers need to be imported from the states; Brand new ones anyways. I dont mind about that. What im actually wondering about is that this item here (http://www.evwparts.com/vwparts/311798111-311-65-69-SS.html) states that the final year it will fit, will be a 69 type 3. May i ask why and if its critical, are there brackets that people to do adapt the bumpers? I dont care if there its not a snug fit. All i care about is if it WILL fit.

Thanks guys! Sorry to be a hassle.
Nick.

I think because its a US website they got the big bumper, flat bonnet, wrap around front indicators, large tail light models in 1970 where as we got them in 71....
so if you have an "early" type 3 as in rounded bonnet, smaller indicators and slim bumpers the ones your looking at will fit..
Anyone please feel free to correct me if i am wrong...............this is only my thinking

Early Bumper onto a late Type 3

Early bumpers will fit, the rear goes straight on, the fronts need the brackets modified. The late models are 90mm wider at the bumper mounts than the earlier models. I'll get some photos of the modified brackets I did for my Squareback over the week end and post them here.

Peter, we got the model change here at the same time as the rest of the world, I had a 70 Squareback back in the 80's, it was the late shape, but early interior like my current 71 Notch.

As jedsgpz said, we got th this 1970 model here at the same time as other countries. My first sighting of "the new body" was in early September 1969 at Lennox Motors, Blacktown.

Is there a place i could straight up purchase some fabricated brackets? or anyone who would make them? and this is all just in the planning stages at the moment. Nothings in cement because its not cheap to purchase new bumpers as well. If anything, to maintain the rat look on my squareback, i would probably buy old as rusty ones. Ill try a few second hand suppliers and ebay/gumtree. And whats the exact name of those overiders for future reference sake? You guys have been a major help so far. Many Thanks!~

Modifying the Early Brackets!

If you check the following photos, I welded a piece of 3-4mm x 50mm plate to the front edge of the inside section of the early brackets, and drilled a slotted hole for the mounting bolt, and also another drilled slotted hole on the outside section. Also have to grind the edges to get a neat fit where it contacts the inside of the bumper.

Additionally the L shaped slotted holes where I modified the original mounting holes to match the late model mounting points.

When fitting, leave all the bolts that hold the brackets to the bumpers loose until fitted to the car, then tighten everything ensuring the bumper is aligned evenly.

if you have the later bar the squarish one on late type 3's just buy some overriders in from the states saves buying new bars, there are also some aftermarket ones going around slightly different shape but look good just the same

Yeh go onto the sumba I'm sure you will see something I think that some also come with the cut out for the rubber mold that goes on the bumper as well. There are lots of ways you can go
