They look like the nuts that hold the steering column to the dash.

I've stripped a lot of type 3's over the years and have buckets full of nuts,bolts washers etc but can honestly say i cant tell what these
are....
Maybe i've forgotten more than i thought.....
How about a hint ??????????

You get to pick from the top shelf Brent!
Spot on. From under the steering column in a 1971 Notch.
Any idea where I can get new ones?
According to the SP Manual no47 they are the nuts in the Saftey Bracket for the steering column.
One of mine the thread is stripped, the other looks a bit deformed. They're made of diecast aluminium.
I've replaced one with a washer and nut but would be happier if it had the proper fitting.
If you have any in your spare nuts bins PV370 I'd happily buy a couple.

Managed to get one from Volks Factory in Adelaide. If anyone has some they want to sell shoot me a pm.
Thinking I might helicoil the stripped on as a spare.

nuts ?????
i cant place exactly where they are in the car.......is there a bracket where the steering column attaches to the dash ????
most of my stuff is early..... but i have plenty of parts to go through
is a 71 collapsable steering column with the newer style steering wheel ????
shoot me a pic of the bracket
i would have some......if i can find them pay me the postage and they are yours

It's from the collapsible column. Called the safety bracket , the square bits are the nuts.

so is the safety bracket bolted to the under side of the dash then the steering column is bolted to the bracket....
or is the bracket inside the section with the 2 slots in the diagram....
like i said i cant visualise where it is in relation to the steering column....
if its on the inside of the dash ie not visible without sticking your head up in the dash area then thats why i dont recall seeing one....
will have a look on saturday to see if i can find a bracket for you

Bolts to the underside of the dash and the column bolts to it. Seems to be late model, about 70 on. Not the best method of engineering I've seen.

Bad news i'm afraid.....
from what i can work out these must be 71 model only......and i dont have any 71's
the 72 im driving and the late wrecks all have a fixed bracket welded on the steering column and all the earlies are totally different.
please let me know if this is correct or not....
maybe i didnt look hard enough ????

They are indeed the bolts that hold the steering column to the dash. Mine were knackered and I ended up casting my own out of araldite with a bolt
suspended in the middle. The thing to be careful of is they are a very easy place for the steering column to get ground, making the horn sound
constantly - they're supposed to be held to their bracket by a layer of glue which also insulated them from the ground.
The ones I made didn't come out really great - might go back some time and refine my technique - but they do the trick, and because they're not
metal the horn doesn't blare all the time!
Oh, my car's a 1970,but I think they were in 71s as well

I managed to get plate with one still glued in. I'm going to helicoil the stripped one and glue it into that plate as well. Then change the whole
lot.
Will get a photo soon as I can
